Today we’d like to introduce you to Sy Monroe.
Hi Sy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started doing hair when I was 16 years old and always knew I wanted to be one of the best in the game so I invested in my craft and went to hair school at 18 straight from high school and graduated then took over the hair and entrepreneurship game ever since. I studied my craft and continued to get better, I would be booked up for the whole month at the age of 19 doing 12-14 clients a day, I worked extremely hard but I always knew it was going to pay off, then I opened my first salon at 21 in 2020 then my next salon at 21 in 2021 then I opened a restaurant at 23 in 2022. I did Cardi B and Tokyo Stylez hair. In 2021 at the age of 22 and was so happy and amazed because I’ve manifested doing Cardi B’s hair since I was 18 in beauty school.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started doing hair at 16, it was a challenge, a lot of people didn’t want me to do their hair because I was really young but as I got more popular that changed, as for opening as much shops and storefronts the most challenging one was my restaurant Copacabana Seafood and Brunch because prior to opening my team and I knew nothing about the food or restaurant business so we had to learn a lot of things as we went and that cost us more money than we should’ve spent and held our grand opening date back.
As you know, we’re big fans of Copacabana Seafood and Brunch, Symonroe Beauty and Symonroe Beauty 2. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own two salons called Symonroe Beauty 1 and 2 and a restaurant called Copacabana Seafood and Brunch. I’m a 23-year-old boss, I’m known for doing hair really well and being a boss opening storefronts. I’m most proud of where I’m coming from, it definitely wasn’t an easy road but that’s what sets me apart from the others I always set my mind to do something and execute it really well. I’ve made a lot of things that are impossible to others possible to me with my crazy work ethic and ambitious drive at such a young age. I’ve opened up storefronts and created jobs for so many young and ambitious people like myself and dropped gems and jewels about how I’ve become a boss at such a young age.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think I’m a really big risk taker, to open up two storefronts at the age of 21 is a huge risk then to open up a restaurant at the age of 23 is the biggest risk of them all without these risks, I wouldn’t have been the boss I am today, theirs no boss without risk. I opened a restaurant at 23 knowing nothing at all about the restaurant business and my business now is two months in and flourishing because of the risks that my team and I took. I’m happy I took the risk that I took without them, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today.
