Meet Sylviana Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylviana Moore.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sylviana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Mobile, Alabama and raised in Sacramento, California. I graduated from Hampton University with a B.S. in Business Management an a minor in Leadership Studies. I am a first-generation college student, I was raised by a single mother and I start working as soon as I could qualify for the permit. At ten, I lost my father to the penitentiary system, which left my mother to raise me by herself. As an only child, I didn’t have an exact blueprint on how to succeed as a Black woman in America. With my mother working two and sometimes three jobs to support me and my father not home, I had to learn how to be responsible at a very early age. It was in those moments of responsibility that I began to develop the leadership skills that would serve as a guiding post on my journey.

Soon, I began to find myself often thrust into leadership positions at school (student government, club activities, etc.) or just as a common connector amongst various friends. It was during my freshman year at Hampton University that I became inspired by Black excellence. For the first time, I was surrounded by inspiring examples of Blackness and what made it most impactful was that many of these examples came from folks who were the same age as me. In my peers, I saw the blueprints, mentors, and organizations that were guiding them and I wondered where mine was at. I pondered how my life may have been different had I been exposed to those same resources. I also began learning about my history and realized that the blueprints and mentors I was yearning for were in the history books as much as they were in present-day life. My epiphany during this first year was that my experience was designed. From being raised by a single mother to having a father being imprisoned, to having limited access to Black excellence and inspiring young Black adults, it is all by design and I had been oblivious to its far-reaching impact within my community. It was nearly two years later, as a Junior at Hampton, when I said yes to my burning desire to serve a greater purpose and decided, “I’m going to create something that empowers the people who look like me. A platform for people who may have been oblivious to certain resources but equally as hungry to achieve success.” I decided to be who I needed when I was younger.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Through-out my matriculation through Hampton I struggled a lot at first as most new college students do. It was the first time I was away from my mother for an extended amount of time, new location, new friends, new financial struggles, etc. Nevertheless, it was the best transformational experience I could have ever had. Before and during my time at Hampton I always valued the power of mentorship. Others guiding me throughout life and live hardship is what made the journey a little more tolerable. As I grow, I understand the value of truly being a student of life. Overall, mentorship is what truly drives the success of our platform. Our team understands that the best thing you can do for a person is to inspire and guide them.
