Today we’d like to introduce you to Symone Redmond.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Symone. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Absolutely! Back in 2013, I started in a network marketing company because I wanted to be able to pay for school. At the time, I was going to school to become a pharmacist, so I love anything that has to do with chemistry. While I was in the network marketing company, I realized that I wasn’t getting as many people signed up as my mentors were, and that’s when I noticed that I was very introverted. I didn’t like talking to people, and I knew that there had to be an easier way to make this work.
After a year of not being able to make money in my network marketing business, I decided to hire my first business coach in 2014. I was nervous because I’ve never invested that amount of money for anything, especially to another person. During one of our coaching sessions, he asked me, “Symone, are you afraid of being on video?” Of course, I said yes, because I hated the sound of my voice! He replies, “Perfect. I need you to create a video and you’re going to upload it to YouTube. There’s not a lot of women on YouTube and this is your chance to dominate it.” At the time, I was so nervous about who would be seeing my videos and how people would react because it was a huge diversion from me wanting to go to pharmacy school.
I believe that’s where my love of being on YouTube and teaching began. I’ve been creating videos since 2014 that were mostly geared towards all entrepreneurs, but I eventually changed it to focus on women entrepreneurs. There is a stigma around what society thinks women should look like all the time. We have to wear tons of makeup before going on camera. We have to have our hair a certain way and all of the other things that society has thrown at us making us feel wary of what we look like and what we wear. In my videos, I break the norm. I rarely wear makeup in my videos, my hair my not be what you expect it to be, but it’s decent. I choose to show women that you can easily make great content without having to be dolled up before creating a video.
Seeing that there aren’t many women on YouTube because it is a male-dominated industry, I create all of my programs with women in mind. I’m striving to show women that running a business and creating videos that your ideal clients can find can be done even with all of the stuff we have to do on a daily basis, we just have to learn how to get out of our own way.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh no, being an entrepreneur has never been a smooth road. There were times that I wanted to give up and stick with going to pharmacy school. Some of the struggles that I have had were not being able to have the money to invest in a coach to help and guide me. I also struggled with my own self-confidence and if I was worthy enough to even help others learn about YouTube and running a business online.
I’ve also created and launched courses that totally flopped and no one signed up. I’ve created free offers for my audience and the sign-up rate wasn’t that great. But it’s always a learning lesson that will help you become better over time and will help you know what your audience really wants from you.
Please tell us about your business.
So, my company is called Symone Redmond, LLC. I specialize in YouTube marketing. I teach women entrepreneurs how to use online video to help them grow their business online without spending tons of money on social media ads, and showing them how they can get more clients, leads and sales inside of their business.
I believe what sets me apart from others is that I’m willing to invest in myself at any cost to get to where I want to go in business. I don’t think I would be this far in my business career if it wasn’t for investing and having the support of my fiancé as well. I’ve always been a go-getter because I know that my business can grow if I have the resources to make that happen.
I also feel that what sets me apart from others is my skin tone and my willingness to truly help others succeed. There aren’t too many African American women who are in the niche that I’m in who are on the YouTube platform. There are tons of people online who create courses and just want to do it for the money. I’m focused on helping women understand how to run a business and learning more about YouTube so they can become successful.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think I would have still stuck with YouTube and helping women entrepreneurs, but I wouldn’t have let my fear of people’s opinions get in the way. There were times to where I wanted to give up and stop being on YouTube for the simple fact that people were watching me and judging what I had to say. If I wasn’t so afraid of their opinions of myself, I feel I would have been more consistent and more successful on YouTube than what I am right now.
