Today we’d like to introduce you to Syreeta Duncan.
Hi Syreeta, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2017, I was presented with an opportunity to own my own semi-professional basketball team. At the time, I was working for a small private school closely associated with all sports, and I saw firsthand the athletes that had skills and others that didn’t but enjoy the sport to stay out of trouble. I also so the need for this kind of opportunity in my community as many players are unscouted, and others and their families just do not have the resources to seek opportunities. So I answered the calling to help others not only physically be equipped but mentally as well. I now service men and women ages 18 and up with opportunities to play on this semi-pro level and even put them in front of opportunities to go further. While providing opportunities for local artists and groups opportunities to perform during game halftimes or sing the national anthem pre-game.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely no; it has not been a smooth road. I am the second African-American female in the state of Alabama to solely own a basketball team for consecutive five years. Being both African American and a female in this industry is very hard, with little to no support. So to have longevity in the sports industry is truly a blessing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
From being a work-from-home mother of two to being an entrepreneur in the areas of author, consulting, and market owner, and league executive, I’m most proud of my resilience to never give up and become more impactful to others. I believe that is also what sets me apart from others, along with how you interact with others and the impressions you leave behind.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I was an only child, only grandchild, and only niece growing up so my most favorite was just always being surrounded by love, seeing love, and feeling love.
