Meet Taivia Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taivia Thompson

Hi Taivia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey to becoming a therapist started when I was in high school enrolled in a psychology 101 class. In our class, was a graduate student TA who was a Ph. D candidate and counseling major. She taught me the basics to being a good counselor. It stuck immediately and I fell in love. I knew it was for me. That fall, I attended Clark Atlanta University with a goal in mind. My goal was to major in psychology and continue straight to graduate school to become a counselor right after. People were always so intrigued that at 18 years old and a freshman on a new college campus I knew I wanted to go to graduate school to get my Master’s. I got where I am today with the help of many individuals who supported my hustle and my dream. They believed it in so I had no choice but to believe in me too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I experienced lots of challenges and obstacles on my journey to become a private practice therapist. Some of the biggest challenges, I faced was overcoming a few of own my traumatic experiences. My fight hasn’t been easy and as I continue to walk my path and I know more than ever I can remain resilient in the face of my adversities. Like many people, 2020 was one of the hardest years for me. I experienced grief and loss in so many ways. From losing my Godmother who was in my life since the day I was born to watching my Mother’s health deteriorate. Times definitely got hard throughout the year. Sometimes I think being a therapist feels like having this supernatural power. People forget we are human too, we aren’t miracle workers, our lives are just as complicated as our client’s sometimes and sometimes we have no clue on how to piece our own stuff together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently work as a private practice therapist. I specialize in providing therapy services to individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, work-related stress and family conflict. I have a passion for working with people of color and processing the topics of social injustices, generational trauma and the challenges that come with being a minority in the current climate. I am most proud of accomplishing my goal to work in a private practice setting. This was something I desired for a long time. It felt like it would never happen for me at times, but I am so grateful and honored to have people that encouraged me to stick to fulfilling my dream. What sets me apart from others is my integrity. Integrity has been a moral principle of mines since I was a child. I take pride in everything I do, the commitments I make and the responsibilities I have. If a person has no integrity could they even be trusted?

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is my 8th birthday party. It’s probably one the biggest parties I’ve ever had in my life. It was a skate party and I had never felt so alive. I vividly remember how happy I felt as I got every gift I wanted plus some. I spent time skating with friends and cousins which I enjoyed and after crashing into many walls and bumping into people in front of me a couple times, I finally learned how to stop my skates at the end of my party. 🤣… I did end the day with a knot on my head but it didn’t matter because I had fun.
