Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Smolyansky.
Tamara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
While working in the legal field, I had a side hustle creating web content for various businesses and working as a contributing editor for online and print publications. Writing provided me with a creative outlet, thankfully, because I was uninspired working as a legal assistant. In my experience, the field is one of the last remaining relics of the Mad Men era. The hierarchy and gender roles (again, through my personal filter) were antiquated and, frankly, not for me.
When my twins were born, time became an issue. I was spending most of my days commuting into Midtown then scrambling to make dinner, help with homework, and prepare us all for the next day. I had an emotional breakdown/breakthrough when I realized that we were spending no real quality time together. I think a lot of parents and caregivers can relate to. I was a blur of activity and exhaustion and we all deserved more. I began writing content for Houzz.com, which sparked my interest in home design and organization and I realized that I could do more than write about it. I created a website, took a leap of faith from corporate to creative, and I’ve never looked back.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road hasn’t been the smoothest. Once the regular paychecks of a traditional job are gone, panic can set in. That’s when you either sink or swim. Dreams don’t happen without drive so I began spreading the word about Le Spruce to people I knew; fellow moms from my children’s school, former colleagues, neighbors, shop owners, the lady in the bathroom stall next to me…everyone. Once I got a few jobs under my belt, I gained confidence. I’ve always been tidy; that came naturally. But the business side of things was a whole new world for me.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Le Spruce creates streamlined, orderly spaces and systems that free clients from clutter and chaos. Our tagline is “Where declutter meets design.” The Le Spruce signature look includes woven baskets, a cohesive mix of materials, and an obsessive eye for detail. Anyone with a label maker can neaten things up, but we strive to create elevated spaces that go beyond basic organizing. We want our work to be Pinterest-worthy.
People I meet often think of professional organizing as a luxury service and it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s unaffordable. Time is a luxury. So is peace of mind. We counsel our clients on how to maintain the systems we introduce so that they can benefit long after we’re finished with their project.
For clients wanting a closet edit, we’re happy to arrange for consignment and/or donation of the items they no longer need. We often forward clothing and toys to North Fulton Community Charities and Foster Care Support Foundation.
What were you like growing up?
My mother tells me that as a child I folded my dirty clothes before putting them in the hamper! I’m just thrilled that I’ve found an outlet for it!
