Meet Tamika Jackson of TJ Tax Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika Jackson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The year was 2008, I was working as a Project Accounting Manager when the downturn of the economy started to impact the construction industry.  The company that I worked for at the time was faced with restructuring, employee transfers, and layoffs.  I was transferred from Charlotte, NC to Atlanta, GA only to be laid-off a year later.  It was very difficult to find another job and a job within the construction industry.  After being laid off for two years, various temporary jobs, and layoffs, I started preparing taxes during tax season.  Unsure of where trying to earn some extra money would lead, lead me to birthing TJ Tax Services.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creating a presence within the industry was difficult in the beginning. When clients aren’t calling, responding to your emails, voicemails, or mail flyers can be discouraging. I wanted to quit many of days but I had to remember why I started.

I’ve had the pleasure of gaining exposure assisting my friend Niakesha Woodley, on her Soft Skills College tour and word of mouth referrals from my previous employers.

Please tell us about TJ Tax Services, LLC…
TJ Tax Services, is a virtual company providing tax preparation and bookkeeping services to individuals and small businesses.  Most of our bookkeeping clients are residential and commercial construction and engineering firms. However, we do serve all small business industries and non-profit organizations as well.

I am most proud of providing quality, professional, and personalized services to our new and long-term clients. We’ve created and maintained a reliable client interface that demonstrates a commitment to timely solution delivery and excellent customer service.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Yes, I have many fond memories from my childhood.  My father worked for Canadian National Railroad and one of the perks was traveling for free (via train). I looked forward to traveling every summer with my parents and siblings.

My favorite places were Toronto and Chicago.  I was fascinated with the architecture and tall buildings in both cities.
Outside of traveling, I enjoyed the weekend library and museum outings around Metro Detroit with my father. As an adult and entrepreneur, I thank my father now for the continuous lectures about saving and being financially conscious.  I didn’t understand then but it plays a pivotal part in my life today.
