Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamill Harris.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After almost twenty years in management in the public sector and nonprofit industry, I decided to build my own black female-owned consulting and coaching firm. I never felt that any of my corporate jobs allowed me to make the difference that I’ve always wanted to make. After starting a nonprofit in 2009 all by myself, it was a daunting task that I felt other passionate leaders shouldn’t have to go through alone. Through my firm, we help change-makers save the world.
In 2020, while beginning my Ph.D. program at Clark Atlanta University it felt like the best time to change the course of my life by becoming the leader of my own firm and creating something that I could be proud of and fulfilled in.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is never easy and anyone who says it is is not being honest, with that said, there have been some struggles. In the beginning, I was juggling a full-time job, my Ph.D. program, and starting The Harris Strategy Group. It was a lot and it was hard. Ultimately, I stopped working my full-time job and focused on my business and school.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I want to do three things with The Harris Strategy Firm, 1) teach nonprofit and grassroots leaders everything they need to know about starting, growing and maintaining a mission-based organization, I want to help them expand their impact across the nation by building coalitions, and partnerships with other grassroots organizations, and finally by supporting nonprofit leaders and their organizations, it allows me to work alongside the world-changers and thought leaders that this world needs.
We offer nonprofit, political, and government consulting including grant writing, strategic planning, meeting planning and program development. We also offer advocacy and lobbying for mission-based organizations, PAC and coalition building, and nonprofit consulting and coaching. We walk executive leaders through so many aspects of running a mission-based organization.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I have learned that you have to be flexible. When COVID hit, most organizations went remote and it became clear that work can be done home and away from the office. It also became clear that many people more than ever needed help and nonprofit leaders were called to the frontline. I learned there was a need for support on the nonprofit end which opened up opportunities for my firm to make a difference by providing the support that they need.
