Today we’d like to introduce you to Taneishia Fields.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was introduced to the residential construction industry early in my life. I started by creating proposals and invoices for the renovations done by my father. He owned and managed a construction company in Florida.
I eventually went on to study at Florida State University where I majored in business management and marketing. After graduation, I begin a career in technology sales for one of the largest technology companies in the world.
For many years, I searched for purpose in my work with no success. But purchasing a new home would unexpectedly reveal my true passion. The home I purchased was beautiful minus the dated kitchen and bathroom. I told my real estate agent that I would not move into the house until it was a home that I loved. I was closing in about three weeks, so needless to say she thought I was crazy. But I was very determined. I sought out and hired contractors. I was in and out of Home Depot picking out finishes and ordering materials every other day. It was all worth it because the results were amazing. I was reminded of the times spent with my father growing up, watching him cut and lay tile. I knew there was something there as I truly enjoyed the entire remodeling process. Managing my own full kitchen and bathroom renovation was the push I needed to form Fields Management Group.
As fate would have it, I ended up meeting two real estate developers who had been flipping homes around the Atlanta metro area. I immediately begin meeting with them to learn about the construction industry. I volunteered and shadowed them on several of their projects. I was excited to learn as much as possible while also lending my time and skills ( project management, design, business management) to their projects. Everything I had learned from those two developers was invaluable. They helped me to build the confidence I needed to really get serious about my business and investing in real estate. I became certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP). Currently, I manage and offer consulting services for construction projects and I also purchase and renovate homes to sell as an investor.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I always knew I wanted to be a business owner, but I didn’t really understand the work it would take to be successful. I possess a number of skills but I was stretching myself too thin doing everything. I honed in on my core strengths and determined how those strengths aligned to the needs of the market and potential clients.
Honestly, each project has its own set of obstacles. Have you ever heard the saying,”it’s always something?” Well, in the construction world it truly is always something. Most times, each part of the project is contingent on the completion of another task. If the lumber doesn’t arrive on time you can’t start the framing of the house. If the electrical rough has not passed inspection you can’t put in the insulation or hang the dry wall.
It has also been interesting working with so many different contractors and vendors. You need contractors who will show up promptly and complete the work. It’s incumbent to know when to replace team members. It’s also challenging to stay on schedule when so many factors are in play. A slow contractor could hold up your entire project for a week or maybe even a month, and that costs money! These are all everyday struggles, but it gets done. With each project, I learn more and I am better prepared for the next one.
Fields Management Group – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Fields Management Group is a boutique project management and consulting company. I am the manager partner specializing in new construction and renovations projects for real estate investors, residential homeowners, and contractors. Many clients have a vision but aren’t sure how to plan and execute on the vision. This is where I come in! I help clients through the entire renovation process which includes permitting, architectural design & layout, interior and exterior finishes, managing contractors, and keeping the project on time and within budget.
I am really proud of what I have built within a male-dominated industry. I believe there are many gaps to be filled and I know I am helping investors, homeowners, and other small businesses to achieve their project goals efficiently. My organization and attention to detail is really what sets me apart. I am constantly thinking of what’s next, ways to automate, alternate perspectives, back up plans, and ultimately ways to execute efficiently for optimal results.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for my business means helping as many people as possible to execute on their visions. I truly love creating plans and executing! It is beyond rewarding transforming homes and seeing everything come to life. Personally, success for me is having the ability to travel anywhere as often as I like, spend time with the people I love and do meaningful work that I enjoy on my terms.
