Meet Taneka Badie of Badie Designs in Downtown Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taneka Badie.

Taneka, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I started my business, I was still attending college at The Art Institute of Atlanta and I was also a new mother. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset so I knew I never wanted to work for anyone other than myself. I got as many freelance opportunities as I could through the school’s career services department. I had been freelancing for small businesses for two years before starting my business. I also started working out of a co-working space and a couple of my classmates were my interns. It was a challenge being a new mother, a full-time student, and business owner. I continued to do work for small businesses until I graduated from college. Afterwards I had more time to focus on how to grow my business. Looking back over the last five years, I have made some great accomplishments in my business. Badie Designs has worked with over 100 businesses in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. We work hard to stay at the forefront of design and integrated marketing technology and practices. We help our clients grow by providing branding, web development, print design, UX/UI design and digital marketing on time and within budget.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth but it has been a learning process. In the beginning years of my business, I didn’t have much knowledge of how to protect my business or finances. I have done work that I wasn’t paid for. It is very important to protect your business from the beginning. I am an introvert so I had a difficult time talking with other business owners at networking events. I had to realize that in order for people to know my business exists I had to tell them about it. I started going to business events two or three times a week to get over my fear of speaking and promote my business.

Now I have no problem discussing what my business does. I have had many challenges but I learned from them and made improvements within my business. I was also fortunate enough to have support from my husband and mother throughout the process.

Please tell us about Badie Designs.

Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Badie Designs specializes in branding, web development, print design, UX/UI design and digital marketing. We enjoy working with entrepreneurs and businesses both large and small. Although a small team, we’re renowned for our results. We’re skilled at working with national and international businesses in a broad spectrum of industries. What sets us apart from others is our approach to providing creative solutions for our clients. We go above and beyond what we are hired to do. That is what our clients love about us.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would have had certain legal things in order to protect my business. I also would have had a better plan on how to scale my business. I thought I could handle everything but I couldn’t because I didn’t have experience in certain areas.

I outsourced some of the things I couldn’t handle. It’s better to hire help than to spend so much time trying to learn the things you don’t know or cause problems by not knowing what you are doing. Times when there was little revenue coming in I had to do more tasks myself.
