Today we’d like to introduce you to Tangela Parker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tangela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My career in healthcare started as an internship position for a federal agency (CMS) in their Regulatory Affairs Department. I was on track to enter law school after completing my undergraduate degree. It was in this role that I learned about Medicaid and how it helped the underserved population. The experience was eye-opening and change the trajectory of my career path. I accepted an entry-level role with the Governor’s office in the Medicaid Division. It was during this time I was able to really acclimate myself on the various programs and services offered through the program. This led to an opportunity in Corporate America as a Senior Manager of Community and Business Development with UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. I was able to really see the impact our services had on the community. It also ignited the marketing and innovation ethos that I still have to this day. I have taken a little nugget from each one of my job roles and they help guide me today as a Senior Director. My journey has not come without some bumps in the road but I would not trade it for anything.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not always a smooth road but it was indeed an educational journey. Learning the different personalities and how to effectively work and managed teams was a struggle initially. I also learned to be a more effective listener and to see situations from other people’s perspective as well as my own.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Learning to plant gardens with my grandfather. He taught me the importance of having patience. Walking to the garden with him every spring and summer, he would dig the hole, I would drop the seeds in and he would then cover it up. We would water and nurture the garden for several weeks. I can remember being so excited when I saw the plants coming through the soil. I reaped the harvest of my hard work. I looked forward to planting the garden with my “Big Daddy” every Spring.
My career has been like my grandfather’s garden, my parents really nurtured, supported and cultivate my career goals. They taught my siblings and me the importance of hard work, dedication and most importantly prayer.
