Today we’d like to introduce you to TaQuilla Scott
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been obsessed with technology. Learning how things work fascinated me. A few years ago, I started watching Jennifer Maker on YouTube making all these cool items with her Cricut. I said to myself I could probably do this. Having 2 toddlers at the time with many events happening meant I was always putting out money for t-shirts, gifts, and other custom options from other people. Being a mobile notary, I also needed things to identify myself and could not get those made quickly without paying outrageous rush fees.
In December 2020, I took the plunge and purchased my first Cricut Maker. After a few failed attempts, and hours watching tutorials, I could use it like second nature. My kids were ecstatic that they could now have their favorite characters on their shirts, book bags, and more all made by their mommy.
After a while, I realized that other mothers like myself were tired of overpaying the few vendors in town for things that could be made themselves for a much lower rate. I started slowly advertising and SomeChicGeek was born. By 2022, people asked for larger designs than my Cricut couldn’t handle, so I added Sublimation options. It was a decision that I do not regret. I can make custom tumblers, keychains, shirts, hoodies, car tags, car decals, and more.
It’s astonishing how my small dream became a full-blown business. This business would not have been possible without the support of my husband whom I work with. Aside from SomeChicGeek, I’m also co-owner of his electronics repair business which has been operating since 2018. My story is simple, I’m a mom from a small town called Richland, GA who works full-time and wants my kids to have all they need without breaking the bank. SomeChicGeek prides itself on providing top-quality products for a reasonable rate.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road. I started my business during the pandemic so sales were very slow in the beginning. That coupled with people thinking that I should just give things away because they “know” me, led to a rough start, and even the temptation to close the business down several times. Businesses can’t run off false promises without profit, so putting my foot down has caused some people to no longer purchase from me, and that’s okay. You can’t get a shirt in Walmart, and walk out the door with it saying you will pay them in a couple weeks. They will have you arrested immediately for theft. Not everyone is your target audience, and that was a hard pill for me to swallow. Supporting people who did not return the favor was a wound that cut fairly deep. I’m not speaking in a monetary fashion, just sharing my business cards, or sharing a social media post.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m currently a full-time community management supervisor and part-time social media moderator. In my full-time job, I oversee a team of community management associates within our Trust and Safety department. We ensure all members are following the community guidelines, and helping those who are not to self-correct. If we detect any fraud or possible account takeovers, those are immediately escalated to our Risk team.
In my part-time position, I moderate social media accounts for an Amazon influencer. Social media moderation has always come second nature to me because I am a fairly social person. It’s rare that I meet a stranger, and can strike up a conversation with just about anyone. In the social realm, people are more likely to tune in to what you have to speak about if you choose to be your true authentic self. Hearing about how you may have had a bad day at work and realizing you have to clean up behind your kids is easy to understand because a lot of us go through this daily.
I’m known for always checking in on others, and always willing to help wherever I can. As a supervisor, I’m willing to get in and deal with the cases just like my associates. I am a firm believer in never asking someone to do something that I’m not willing to do myself. I’m most proud of not giving up. There are not many people in the community management or social moderation realm who look like me, so when a previous job said no, I pushed forward to find one that was not biased and was willing to say yes. I have been with this company for two years, and have never looked back.
What sets me apart from others is that I’m willing to take risks. Not all risks are worth it, but when you take time to properly dissect the situation, and realize that the pros outweigh the cons, if you can get your mind prepared for it, take the chance!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is different for everyone. Personally, success for me can be achieving anything that gives me joy. The small wins always equal something bigger. My biggest success this year (so far) was being able to build my website on my own. I had quotes from different companies. Some were as low as $200 and some as high as $3500 just to do the groundwork for the build. That seemed like a waste of money that could otherwise be put into something else so I hopped to YouTube University, spent a few hours researching then set aside a couple of hours one night to make it happen.
