Today we’d like to introduce you to Tareik Smith.
Tareik, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first began sewing in middle school. I learned in home ed class I started off doing small embroidery pieces and from there, it was really a snowball effect that occurred once I started working I bought my first sewing machine that was cheap but good at that time because I would have sewed a lot. So with my first sewing machine, I started off tapering pants and jackets that were to big but would make them fit to my liking.
Once I went to college, I took a break from sewing and just picked it back up in 2020 and starting back like anyone who hasn’t done something in a while you aren’t gonna be the best at it so on the first project I attempted to make a hoodie and got discouraged because it didn’t turn out good at all so I took a month or two to get back in the flow and made my first jacket and I couldn’t be any happier knowing a couple of months ago I couldn’t complete any project I tried to do to making great quality products. So as I progressed doing more jackets, they became better and better and other people began to want them so I decided to start a business and call it Pals Club.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road was not smooth at all and it never will I believe but that to me is what makes the journey worth it. Starting off, I would try to make jackets and never could complete them because I didn’t know how to sew a certain way and would just give up. But once I settled down and came to one with what I was trying to do here, which is inspire, I have to lead by example and push through things that are difficult and the outcome was me knowing how to make great products that continue to get better.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pals Club story. Tell us more about the business.
PALS CLUB will be a cult. Pals club will consist of products from jackets, bags, pants, shirts and shorts. Also, pals club will be collaborating with artists, athletes and many more influential people giving different perspectives on others’ world. So everyone can be looking forward to documentaries, fashion shows, short stories and authentic vibes.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ll have to say a little bit of both but I feel like you kind of need them. They offset each other if that makes sense. In other words, I feel like the bad times are just as good as the good times if you decide to look at it that way. The lessons you learn the bad times are what makes the good times worth having and during those good times, the experience of those bad times are what will keep you humble and motivated to keep going forward.
