Meet Tarryn Sampson of TS Tax & Accounting Services in Mableton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarryn Sampson.

Tarryn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I took my first tax class back in 1996. I saw an advertisement for tax classes at one of the largest tax companies. Who would have thought it would lead to me having my own tax firm.

I worked with that tax company part-time for 6yrs (tax years 1996 to 2002). As the environment there started to change, I decided I could do it on my own. Ironically, I received a call from a tax software company right before the tax season started. I took it as a sign and purchased the software. So that upcoming tax season, I started preparing taxes for friends, family & referrals part-time in the evening from home. I had a full-time accounting job with a company I had been with since 1999.

Over the years, I had a yearning to do something more. Something more than being an accountant at a company I felt no longer appreciated me. So, in August 2014, God spoke to me and said it was time to move on. I put in my resignation thinking I was going to do something totally different. After I left, God revealed that I would be opening my own tax & accounting business. I was disappointed. LOL

I just knew I would be doing something creative & uplifting people. But I embraced it and decided to be obedient.

Since this industry is riddled with so much fraud and fly by night “tax preparers”, I felt it was extremely important for me to have an office space. I signed my lease and moved in Jan 2015. My first year in here was amazing. People would walk in and we would have inspiring conversations about entrepreneurial journey. There would always be hugs & tears involved. Many left inspired to start their faith walk.

The next year was a major learning year for me. I was fearful and started to doubt that I could survive. So I started a partnership with two other ladies. That ended before the next tax season started. I felt terrible. But I started to get a sense of who I was as a businesswoman, not just a tax professional. I started to rebuild the confidence that I lost working in corporate. As I attended meetings with other entrepreneurs/small business owners and worked with coaches I started to see the wealth of information I had that others needed.

What started out as a yearning to do something greater turned into a thriving tax & accounting business. This year alone, I saved a couple clients who came to me with tax issues approximately $20,000 in taxes & penalties. I host a series at my office called WoW Wealth of Wisdom. Each month has a different topic. They’ve ranged from Estate Planning for Women of Color to How to Avoid an Audit. I’ve also been asked to speak at a number events to help small business owners with accounting and taxes. I’ve even been asked by some women to help mentor them to leave their corporate jobs and step out on faith. So currently I am working on a coaching program. My journey has been amazing. I look forward to what else is in store for me and the people who what through my door.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. It still isn’t. But if I had to do it all over, I most definitely would.

My first and biggest obstacle was myself. Corporate had broken me down more than I realized. As challenges came my way, I started doubting myself and my abilities. I also struggled with knowing how to grow my business, time management and believing that just because God directed me here, “If I build it they would come”.

I am the only working person in my household (teenage daughter & parents), so finances have been a challenge. It continues to be, but my family has been a tremendous support.
