Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gibbs
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hi there. I am Taylor Gibbs, 27 years old ago, and I am a female farmer. As a small child, I grew up at a wholesale nursery. I witnessed my grandmother work on the hottest days of August and the coldest days in February and I thought to myself…I want to do that. After high school, I went to college. I tried my best to make it through because it just seemed like the “next step.” It never was for me.. I craved greenery, vitamin D, and everything that nature had to offer. I then met my husband and we decided to take on farming. We ran a first-generation dairy farm for five years. The industry came crashing down so we shut the doors to the dairy. That old barn just sat down there collecting dust and dirt. Then came my idea for The Barn of Blooms one day while working in the garden. “Bloom where you are planted.” I knew I had to touch it. So in four months, we turned the dairy barn into a small nursery where I sale trees, perennials, shrubs, annuals, and organic produce that I grow right here on the farm. We opened the first of April and have been so surprised with the outstanding support from our community and surrounding areas. I’m living my actual dream with my husband and two small children by my side on our farm in Ranburne, AL. If you ever get a chance to come visit our farm we would be thrilled.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Farming is anything but smooth. We do it because we love it. We love the animals. We love the land. We love everything that the land has to offer. We have had quite the journey to get where we. Whenever the dairy industry crashed we had so much in it. You can not just sale out because no one wants in it. It is nearly impossible to start up a first-generation farm. But that is life and you continue to push through.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Barn of Blooms story. Tell us more about the business.
The Barn of Blooms takes great pride in the quality of the plans that come out of the barn. We only sale the best of the best. We are known around here for our fruit trees and shade trees. After the summer season my goal is to be known for the best produce in the West GA area as well.
Whenever I think of the history of the barn that truly is what makes me so proud. That barn has seen us seven days a week for many, many years now. So much love has been poured into this.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I personally do not believe much in luck. I believe you are handed your cards and you make the best of it. You create your journey.
