Meet Taylor Peake of MotionMobs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Peake.

Taylor Peake

Taylor, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in a small Alabama town, I do not have a typical tech founder’s background. At 19 years old, I co-founded a software consulting and development firm during my last semester in college with another engineer. Our concept and motivation were simple. In 2010, mobile technology was in its infancy, mobile strategy was non-existent for most companies, and established executives weren’t convinced that mobile apps would ever expand beyond games for kids. Being part of the early days and explosive growth of mobile apps and having front-row seats to society-changing innovation was an incredible experience. Fourteen years later, I am immensely proud of the partners and team members we have worked with over the years. Advancing technology is a uniquely challenging and rewarding space. Things are constantly evolving, such as the current buzzy environment around artificial intelligence, and as a leader, you have the difficult task of balancing culture, research, and growth.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth, straight road for anyone, and there was no exception for me. Being a female in an underrepresented industry, launching a tech company in Alabama fourteen years ago, and building it as a first-generation entrepreneur all brought challenges to the already difficult landscape of taking the plunge to start something new. These unique attributes also brought a new perspective to the industry.

As an entrepreneur, I have made many mistakes and run into several roadblocks over the years. Even the simplest things can go sideways. Sometimes, it’s simply acknowledging when I’ve prioritized wrong or spent my time poorly.

As an example, our team was being honored out-of-state for a project we completed. Part of the event included a pitch competition to expand the program. Emily Hart, my partner, was unanimously picked by our team to give the pitch, and for good reason. Unfortunately, she had a conflict with an important family event and was unable to attend. I had big shoes to fill in Emily’s absence and really wanted to make the team proud. I walked on stage and was blinded by an oversized spotlight. I froze literally like a deer in headlights. The pitch was timed, the clock was ticking, and I couldn’t speak. Finally, I stumbled through the pitch and pulled it together just in time for Q&A. Every day is different for an entrepreneur; you never know when you’ll get pulled in an unexpected direction. Managing time is a huge challenge for all entrepreneurs, and apparently spotlights really do a number on me.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Continued advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have already substantially changed the technology landscape, and I believe we’ll continue to see these advance quickly. Developers have become more effective and creative, companies can now glean better insights, and software has become even more tailored to the unique needs of each user. The productization of AI will continue to grow. We’re seeing business leaders start to ideate on what AI could do for them next.
