Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Worthey.
Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a digital artist from Alabama. I enjoy creating cartoon illustrations and portraits. Since I was a little kid in elementary school, I’ve always gravitated towards art. I couldn’t wait for Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, I knew I was going to art class. In middle school, classmates would want me to draw things for them. I started a side hustle of selling these hand-drawn cartoon bears with different brand labels on them. I was really making decked out Baby Phat or Air Jordan bears upon request for 25 cents. When I got to high school, I did not draw much anymore. However, that passion was still in me just hidden for a while. The passion for art was restored when one of my sisters started a t-shirt business. I did some soul searching and asked myself “What are YOU good at?” I then remembered that I used to draw. I started to practice relentlessly and got a sketchbook from a local art supply store. I forced myself to draw even when I did not feel like it. It did not matter if it was a circle, I was drawing something. There were many nights I fell asleep with my sketchbook in my lap. Of course, after years of not drawing anything, I was rusty. Through practice, I improved my drawing skills. In 2016, I began to take art seriously and decided to create an Instagram to post my art. Later that year, I discovered digital art and began to teach myself. With the help of God, six years later it is still something I have a passion for and enjoy.
I incorporate a lot of nostalgic memories in my work- from childhood to family memories. I want my art to register with the soul or spark happy feelings. Most importantly, I hope to make an impact through my art that gives God glory. After all, HE is reason I have this gift.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting my art seen has not been a smooth road. I think we could all blame the social media algorithm for that somewhat. However, I have been blessed to have my art seen by Martin Lawrence, Kid n Play, Cedric the Entertainer, Jess Hilarious, 85 South Show, etc. I have learned to enjoy the process and trust God’s timing. God knows the How and the When. It is not my job to worry about that. I just need to be a good steward of my God-given talent and let Him handle the rest.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am digital artist. I draw cartoon illustrations on my iPad. I like to create children illustrations mostly. When I first began taking art serious in 2016, I started off traditional, I played around with acrylics until I learned about digital art. I noticed people doing it on social media and I knew it was something I wanted to try.
I am most proud of the fact that I value quality over quantity when it comes to putting out work. I used to upload just to upload or create something solely because it was a popular trend. Now, I focus on putting out quality. Art for me is more than a hobby, it is a passion.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that I am simply myself. No one can be you. God gave us all our own sauce that can not be duplicated.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can contact me for commission requests through my Instagram DM, email or even through my portfolio website. I check my Instagram DM’s often. If you want to support, I am always grateful to anyone that reposts or shares my art. Telling a friend or family member about me means a lot as well.
