Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Jackson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ted. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am Ted Jackson, Owner/Designer, of G Spot Creations. Not born in the A, but I was raised in the Metro Atlanta since 1983 having lived in East Point and College Park in my younger years and Stockbridge, Ga afterwards.
I have always been a lover of fashion. From as early as elementary school there was a desire to look the best as I enter a room. Accessories have always accented my wardrobe to ensure I was a little different. That included watches, bracelets, hats, socks, belts, rings and definitely shoes. So, it has always been a part my life.
My hat “journey” began maybe 5 years ago. I was the person who felt that I did not look right in certain hats. Now, if you payed attention to an earlier statement I said I have always wore hats, but they were fitted team hats and baseball caps. I really never ventured into the Fedoras, Porkpies, or even Cowboy hats for fear of it not fitting me. I digress, back to my “journey.” I went out on a limb and purchased a fedora and loved it. Afterwards I purchased several styles of varying colors and materials discovering a love for how it made me feel and look. One day, I told by wife that as much as I love my current hats, I thought I could design a hat that was more of what I like to show my personal style. From there, six hats were bought and created. Nikhol, my wife, looked at them and said “you ever thought about selling those?” My response was “no…I made these for myself to wear not to sell.” As the wheels in my mind began to turn, I thought why not! Pictures was sent to friend, co-workers, family, and fraternity brothers (shout out to Omega Psi Phi) asking for their honest opinion. I was pleasantly surprised with the feedback. That birthed the creation of G Spot Creations.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No…by no means has it been a smooth road for me. There were two main struggles/challenges I have and continue to face. One being I have had to learn to get out of my own way. A lot of times it is not others that cause you to not succeed in life, it is you. One of the things I thought about this morning was fear. I questioned, “was it a fear of success or am I successful at creating fear?” As an entrepreneur fear can be your worst enemy! I believe it is sometimes innate that we will talk ourselves out of something before we convince ourselves we can do it. With that said, I had to move out of Ted’s way and make a dream into reality. My second struggle is one I again still face on a reoccurring basis. I had to realize that everyone was not going to love all my designs. Especially the ones I spend extra time on to get them perfect in my eyes. You know, the one that when you complete it you say, “this hat is going to be a show stopper!” But, when finally unveiled to the public, the response if less than what you expected or it remains on the shelf longer than others. I am learning my artistry will be adored on an individual basis and not holistically to all consumers. I often tell customers, “you will know your hat when you see it or try it on because it will speak to you…It will help you Arouse Your Individuality!” I am better in both areas now that have challenged me but I conquer obstacles daily in my journey.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about G Spot Creations – what should we know?
I am excited to tell you about G Spot Creations, LLC. We are a small business that creates custom head wear that showcase individual personality. With carefully selected adornments and hand-made embellishments, each hat created is a statement piece that garners attention as you enter a room.
All hats are finished with the selection of a signature button. “Why the button?” In the simplest terms, a button pulls together or tightens. It is our belief that the right hat does that for your outfit. The button represents the cohesive relationship created when your hat completes the wardrobe. Get Buttoned Up!!
What sets me aside is that my customer base can feel confident in knowing that no one is the city, state, country, or world will have your signature piece. No two hats are the exact same in design.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are several individuals who deserve credit in getting me to this point in life. I will start with my mother who raised two boys as a single mother in a city/state with no family to help. She instilled the desire to go after what you want with hard work, determination, and the will to succeed. She has always told me, “you better follow up with your ideas/creations before somebody else does it!” I have watched several friend and family members operate businesses over the years and they have served as mentors in my journey. Watching them was an inspiration to me because I felt that If they can do it, I can do it as well. Shout out to Travis Stroud (Gamebreaker), Rashid McGriff (photography), Tara Brown, Charles Marable (COGG), James Cornelius (I love My Plug), Carl Beard (Triple C Automotive), Jay Bailey, Jennet Jackson (Weathered Not Worn), to name a few. If I left you out, charge it to my head and not my heart. I watched, gotten inspirational words, and worked with these entrepreneurs as well as many others along the way and it has shaped me into who I am today. I gotta take a little time to mention my brother, Derick Jackson, The Artist. He has served as a father, brother, cheerleader, advocate, frat brother, client, and friend throughout life and I appreciate him for it. Lastly, but certainly not least is my beautiful wife Nikhol B. Jackson. Together we have been serial entrepreneurs for 19 years. We have started all of our business ventures in support of one another. Through all the failures and successes, she has been there to support. Her desire to succeed is one of my greatest inspirations. Without her, there would be no me!
