Meet Temperance Griffith of Tempting Faces Makeup Artistry in Birmingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Temperance Griffith.

Temperance, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved Makeup, even as a child. I would be fascinated watching my aunt Loretta put on her makeup, and my grandmothers would take me to the Fashion Fair counter with them. As preteen, I would get put on punishment for sneaking into my mom’s makeup.

Later in life, I would take a bag of makeup to work and put it on myself and my friends. In February 2015, I decided I wanted to do it professionally. I didn’t want to just jump out there, so I took a class from an MUA that had been in the industry for over 20 years. I also learned a lot from one of my closest friends who’d been doing makeup for over a decade. I would practice during any free time I had to sharpen my skills.

My very first client was my cousin. I sent her picture to a group chat of friends and they were very supportive, but one of my outspoken friends told me, “Friend, you gotta work on those brows”. That stuck with me to this day. The irony is, I hated brows, and now I offer micro shading services to give women perfect brows every day.

Four years later, I have my own studio and have worked with hundreds of women in every profession. I’ve taught classes, business seminars, TV segments, and eventually developed my own brow line called Tempted Browz. Everything has come full circle.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggle with being a makeup artist is people often don’t take your craft seriously. I think my dad still thinks it’sa hobby lol, but I am constantly studying and taking classes to make sure my work evolves. It is often said the market is oversaturated with MUA’s and that may be true, but I’ve always believed that who and what God has for me, man can’t intercede. I went from wondering if I would have two clients on a weekend to being booked every weekend.

I would struggle with doing makeup the “popular” or “Instagram” way, although I didn’t really like that and it didn’t feel natural to me. After trying to do makeup like everyone else I got to a point where I said, I’m going to do it my way, and those who like it will book me. Once I took that stance my business grew tremendously.

Please tell us about Tempting Faces Makeup Artistry.
Tempting Faces Makeup artistry was created in 2015. I offer Makeup, Bridal Services, and Semi-Permanent makeup in Microshading. My most requested service is Microshading. I have become known for my brow services, and my ability to provide makeup application that maintains the integrity of a natural face.

I am most proud of my growth as an artist in the brow area. I hated eyebrows. I literally could not arch them to save my life. It was just something I did because I had to. It’s amazing how God can turn your weakness into your strength and allow it to set you apart from others.

I also have a tax business, Virtue Tax and Bookkeeping, so not only can I do your makeup, I can also save you money. Business has always been something I was good at. I can teach other MUA’s or any entrepreneur how to legally set up their business and legitimize it.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory would be baking with my grandmother. I bake when I have free time, which is rare, but I would sit in the kitchen with her while she made pies, butter rolls, etc.
