Today we’d like to introduce you to Terese Thomas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Terese. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
TREEZY EATS was developed because of my love and passion for natural and real foods including a plant-based lifestyle. I have always been fascinated on how foods fuel the body and believe if you listen to your body, it will tell you what you need. I became a vegetarian in the early 90’s when I was a young ballet dancer. I chose the lifestyle because I believed in a healthier way of life. I started reading labels and became concerned with what was in the food I was eating and how it affected my body. Food was important to me as I moved through my dance career and being able to fuel my body properly for the rigorous schedule. This led to my many “creations” in the kitchen trying to fuel my body. I continued exploring movement and food and how it affected the body in college by receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Georgia State University. Fast forward many years later, I’m is still creating in the kitchen with my husband-Jeremy.
Over the years, after I left the dance studio, I developed a love for cycling. While training for a century ride (100 miles) in 2018, I was again very conscious of what I was using to fuel my body during all my training. My goal was to complete the ride and feel good at the end. I did not want to “bonk” during my training or the big ride. I also wanted to eat real plant-based foods and stay away from the processed stuff I found at the stores. Through trial and error, I developed my DOMESTIQUE Peanut Chocolate Energy Bites. I would make a batch of the energy bites and take them with on my long rides to eat when fuel was necessary. The training was successful and so was the century ride. Through the process, my husband was able to enjoy the energy bites too and shared them with our family and friends. Everyone loved the energy bites as much as we did and wanted their own batch to take with them everywhere. This is when we had the idea to make them more accessible to others and start a business. We are excited to share our TREEZY EATS DOMESTIQUE Energy Bites with you.
Has it been a smooth road?
We feel lucky because the road has been pretty smooth so far. The hardest part for us was trying to figure out what kind of license we needed and where to get started. Everything we read about starting a food business made it seem hard. We decided to start our business as a cottage food business and working in our home. It works for us right now but limits us to our weekend Pop- up Shops and internet sales. We want to grow in 2020 into a commercial kitchen and be able to sell our product in stores to make it easier to get our TREEZY EATS to our growing customer base. We would love to be in Whole Foods.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Treezy Eats story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in providing real food that is simply made. Our energy bites are made in small batches and hand-rolled to perfection. We believe in a plant-based lifestyle and feeding the body nourishing foods. I’m proud of us and all that was have accomplished this far- We’ve made a product, started a business and people love it! Now we need to grow and get our product in stores.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see more and more people moving towards a plant-based lifestyle and feeding their bodies with real foods. I’ve already seen the shift and it excites me that I’m no longer the odd man out. I’m happy to be part of the movement and share my recipes and experiences with the community.
