Meet Terrence Baldwin of T Baldwin Music in Montgomery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Baldwin.

Terrence, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as a young musician singing in the youth choir at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama under the direction of Minnie Stringer. Received a lot of guidance from Dr. Tonea Stewart, a renowned actor, while participating in summer camps at Alabama State University. I later went to CCPAC (Carver Creative and Performance Center that eventually became Booker T Washington Magnet School. After graduating high school, I attended Alabama State University, where I majored in music education and performed in the University Choir where I was section leader for 4 years. After graduation, I taught music for one year before traveling with the American Idol winner Ruben Studdard. We travelled the world and appeared on notable sitcoms such as The Today Show, Late Night with Jay Leno, The View, and many more. While traveling, I established my cover band Souled Out Groove. Since the birth, Souled Out has been a staple in the community and has been a stepping stone to many of the area musicians who have gone on to do great things in the field of music.

In 2013, I decided to reactivate my love for music education by creating Music Education On Wheels (MEOW Academy). Since then, MEOW has touched hundreds of young musicians by teaching piano, guitar, voice and drums. MEOW is also responsible for summer camps and music learning for youth on the autism spectrum.

T Baldwin Music is the parent company of all of these establishments. Due to COVID 19, T Baldwin Music has been on the front lines to preserve the life line of music in our world. T Baldwin Music hosts a weekly virtual performance series called Wednesday Night Live, which airs weekly on Facebook, IG, and YouTube. This was designed to provide opportunity to deserving artists and be the bridge between local business and entertainment. Wednesday Night Live has been blessed by some of the best singers in the region from The Voice’s Kirk Jay, Birmingham’s Ruben Studdard, Atlanta’s DJ Wright, and many more.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been an easy right, but I have made a personal mantra to stay fluid. Not being stuck in a certain mode and adjusting to what the world needs. I’ve also realized that the less it is about me, the more relevant my purpose is. Much of my mission is how I can use my ability to work for a bigger cause that benefits others. From there, the universe will give me everything I need. COVID has been our biggest foe to date. But the support of the community has been the floating device that has sustained us. We are thriving through COVID. We are not only surviving, but providing opportunity at a time of scarcity.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about T Baldwin Music – what should we know?
I am most proud to see these young people that have been impacted by our work. It’s a wonderful thing to see your work fertilized your industry. My son Terrence “That Boogie” Baldwin is the future. He is a growing writer and performer. I just hope that as I develop, I can make his road easier and add to the Baldwin Legacy. I need for our grandkids and great grandkids to feel the impact of our works.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are a host of people who deserve credit for who I am. First, The Creator, my wife Ronya Baldwin, my kids Terron, Terrence Jr., and Rodney, my mom Orlean Baldwin, Tonea Stewart, Minnie Stringer, Carol Cheatham, Willie Vincent, and everyone that I’m forgetting.
