Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Fields.
Terrence, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been a natural portrait artist since I can remember. When I was only 6 or 7 years old, I remember constantly drawing pictures of Micheal Jordan from different sports magazines my grandfather had. As time went on, I found drawing more therapeutic so I drew daily no matter what, I had to get someone’s portrait drawn. I worked a number of different jobs before I began tattooing, from sales to the IT field. No matter how long I stopped drawing, I always felt comfortable in it when I started again. I began tattooing in 2010 while visiting my brother in Augusta, GA. I was sitting on his couch, drawing a portrait of Rihanna. All his military buddies were around and impressed with my artwork. They all wondered why I was working in the IT field and that’s when my brother said, “you should start tattooing, ill buy your equipment and I have a friend that can teach you how to use it all.”
At that moment, I realized I probably could do this if I can apply the same techniques from drawing. That wasn’t the case, there was a huge learning curve but once I did my first tattoo on my brother, I was hooked. That weekend I called my job back in NC, quit and moved in with my bother. I began practicing on everyone that allowed me to. After a few months, I moved to Jacksonville, FL, to pursue an apprenticeship. I worked in a few different shops before making my way back to DC, where I found an appropriate apprenticeship at Champion Tattoo in 2013. I have worked with and met some amazing artists that I have had the pleasure of learning from, but once I met an artist named Tyler Brewer, he gave me every ounce of knowledge he had about this industry. He completely helped my tattooing and my career moving forward, I have now been tattooing for over nine years and constantly growing in my craft. I specialize in black and grey portraiture. This has been a goal of mine since I became a full-time artist, I now own a tattoo studio in Maryland and plan on expanding in the future to other states as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, from learning more about this industry to opening a business, it has been tough but I believe you can grow through struggles. While opening a business, my biggest struggle has been marketing and branding my company. Through consistency and putting out good work, I have been able to build a steady clientele base that continues to expand. I have learned that word of mouth is the best advertisement you can get. Reviews play a huge part so you always want to make sure your customers have a great experience with you.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Anomaly Tattoo Company story. Tell us more about your art.
My business is Anomaly Tattoo Company. We are a private art and tattoo studio. I specialize in black and grey realism and portraits. I am best known for hyper-realism my portrait drawing. I am proud that we have upheld great customer service and great work for our clients. I believe that your shop is only as good as the artists you have in it, so I like to treat my artists like a friend and make sure they are comfortable no matter what.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe hard work, talent and consistency have gotten me to where I am, not just luck. I have been lucky in life not to give up when things get hard. I have always been able to overcome the struggles of growing in this industry because I just never gave up. I believe anyone can do anything they give their all to.
