Meet The Dazy Chains

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Dazy Chains. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The Dazy Chains formed in Fall 2019 after guitarists Jack Faught and Jack Weatherby had a falling out with their cover band. Faught met drummer Daniel Hogan through a class in the music business program at UGA, and the three of us started playing together and writing music. Soon after, bassist Caitlin Santos joined the band, who is also a UGA student in the Music school. After trying out many singers, Daniel’s roommate Cole Dziedzic joined and The Dazy Chains were ready to hit the ground running. In March 2020, we released our debut EP, “Illusion Confusion”, recorded at Chase Park Transduction. After the success of Illusion Confusion, The Dazy Chains searched for a new sound and found it with singer Hannah Meachum and recording engineer Chris Byron. Our debut Album, “Electric Sunshine”, was released after months of recording in studios, classrooms and bedrooms. The album was mixed in-house by the band and mastered by Byron. We spent a long period promoting the album with gigs across both Atlanta and Athens, leading to a boost in streaming numbers, particularly for the song “Hypnotize”. Looking toward what was next, we continued writing new music and were able to add Stewie Brannam as a vocalist and record more at the Nuci’s Amplify studio with Byron. We have released one of the songs recorded during this period entitled “Spiral”, also featuring a subtle yet mesmerizing french horn part from Santos. The release of Spiral further popularized our band and landed in many people’s playlists for the summer of 2022.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Dazy Chains has tried out half a dozen different singers in pursuit of the perfect vibe to compliment the instrumentation. We are happy with the end result of all of our projects and love to look back on the way each vocalist has influenced the songs of their era. We often had fill-in singers for gigs between eras, including Adam Rose, the vocalist of Faught’s metal band Actus Reus. We finally found Stewie and have found our stride on stage and in studios alike. In more recent times, we have been working hard to get together as much as possible since some members have moved out of Athens to different locations. It can be a struggle to find time to practice with some members having demanding work schedules, but The Dazy Chains will always find a way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Dazy Chains has a unique sound that is a reflection of the many different musical influences each band member has. Guitarist Jack Faught is also in a heavy metal band, so this influence is reflected in some of the heavier songs that we have written. There are certainly a lot of psychedelic influences in our music as well, along with jazz, funk, reggae and rock influences. We try not to limit ourselves to any particular sound and we keep a very open mind when writing new music. Caitlin’s diverse talents and connection to the UGA’s School of Music has led to interesting features of instruments unusual to most rock bands, some of which will be observed in an upcoming single entitled “Suspicious Stew”, which was one pioneered by Caitlin and Stewie. The song was one of the first we wrote with Stewie. Throughout our journey, we have been lucky enough to have the incredibly talented Daniel Hogan ripping the drums, who can effortlessly blend the scattered genres each member throws into the mix.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The thriving Athens music scene has helped us become the best band we can. The most important resource to us has been Nuci’s space in downtown Athens, which provides both a practice space and a recording studio. The practice spaces make it possible for many Athens bands to exist when it is so difficult to practice with students living in dorms or apartment buildings. Another resource to us has been our friends in other amazing local bands who have lifted us up and helped us get in front of new crowds. These bands include (but are definitely not limited to) Shameless James, Alien Funk Academy, Kaydelis, Red Eye Orchestra, and Open.
