Today we’d like to introduce you to Thea de Sousa.
Thea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out my career in entertainment on the Second Unit Crew of Seinfeld. I helped scout the locations and film the buildings that would become the establishing shots for each episode.
After that, I moved from NYC to LA to become an assistant to the manager for Mike Myers, Chris Rock and Keanu Reeves, Erwin Stoff of 3Arts Entertainment. I worked closely with these celebrities as well as many other represented by the firm. Then, I went on to work for Matt Gross at Kopelson Entertainment as a development assistant. My job was assisting Matt as well as reading and evaluating scripts and other material suitable for film. After working as an assistant in Hollywood, I was hired as a Creative Executive for Harold Ramis on the Fox Lot. My job was to bring projects into the studio for Harold to produce or direct.
After working in Hollywood, I moved back to NYC to become a story editor for Julia Roberts at Shoelace Productions. A young French girl came to my office to bring a project to Julia and she just wrote and directed a feature film about it called Mon Heroine that was made by Universal Pictures. Since then I have worked at developing scripts and projects independently, and I recently co-wrote Amber Portwood’s memoir “So, You’re Crazy, Too?” I have also just finished writing a Real Housewives Trivia Book for Quarto Publishing that is out in the fall. I run a meme page on Instagram called @yourmomsarewatching where I tell stories from my life and make memes about Bravo shows and pop culture.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I spent 9-11 in NYC working for Julia Roberts and with Tim Robbins and Jennifer Lopez, and three weeks later I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After that, I was unable to work a regular office job, but I kept busy writing and developing projects from home.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My strength is my storytelling. I have amassed a series of stories about my life that I save in the highlights of my IG page, @yourmomsarewatching, that have attracted attention online. I also love making memes and find sharing them a way of bringing humor to all of my followers.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
It’s never too late! I had my two children at 47 and 49 by using an egg donor in Portugal. Never give up on your dreams, no matter your age or disability.
