Meet Theresa Tha Songbird of B.I.R.D. Media Enterprises in Ashby/Washington Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Tha Songbird.

Theresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born with a heart murmur, a hole in my heart, to parents who’d waited very long, and tried very hard to have a child. Eight days later I endured my first surgery to close that hole. This will prove to be a metaphor for my entire life.

As an artist, I find that I am constantly looking for ways to put my heart fully into everything that I do. I’ve been on stage since I was nine, writing since the age of 14, and performing poetry since I was 17. I went to college as a music major and graduated as the only black School of Music graduate in 2004. My life has always been dedicated to the arts, so my relocation from Chicago to Atlanta in 2008 was driven by the opportunities in entertainment and the arts that are abundant in this city.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This world is not meant to be easy. I think anything that you desire to do requires testing. A lot of the things that I have endured, be it homelessness, or depression, or the things that I deal with presently concerning the health of my family, all these things are meant to push your character as a human being. What kind of person are you when things are difficult? That has been my focus as I move through times when my life is hard or when this journey as an entertainer seems impossible to navigate. For me, the most difficult struggles have been my ability to adapt and change more quickly, but I have been improving in that field!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about B.I.R.D. Media Enterprises – what should we know?
B.I.R.D. Media Enterprises is a multiplatform consulting, design and production company built to help artists and entertainers succeed in business! My company provides a plethora of services, from graphic design work and brand-building consultations to production assistance and creative direction on any set, as well as vocal coaching, writing assistance and in-studio consultations. It is more or less a one-stop-shop to help bring out the best in your talent!

I am very proud to have the experience of going viral (over 5 million views) and having my poetry be seen by millions of people and knowing its been shared across the world from my appearance on the 2019 Bounce TV Trumpet Awards. However as a company what I am most proud of is the programming for enriching the youth with poetry, writing and performance workshops through outreach with the Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson Charter School in Baltimore Maryland, and several Atlanta Public Schools, Charter Schools and after-school programs.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the quality that has been most important to my success has been to reflect the lives that inspire me. As I move through life, I often think of my mother and father, and their family members who set them on a path of being very hard workers and also being genuinely good people. My parents have always sacrificed a lot for my sisters and I, and for everyone in our extended family to have better lives! In everything I do I desire to give as much love as I can in that moment and hope that as many people are uplifted and invigorated with that same self-love and that same desire to be a better person.
