Meet Tia Burgess of Bloom Nails

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Burgess.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story starts with the untimely death of my mother-in-law. She was loved by so many and created a legacy for her children. When I reflected on my own experiences, I discovered that I didn’t necessarily like what I found. I had been toying around with doing my own nails for a while and decided to enroll into cosmetology classes to become a nail technician. What could it hurt? I soon found that I was on the path that God had for me all along. I found my passion and purpose in serving others, in educating them and myself. I graduated from Georgia Career Institute in December 2020, took my GA practical and written exams in January 2021, and received my nail tech license soon after. I opened an in-home salon Spring of 2021 and found that I didn’t have a head for business at all. I hated self-promotion and couldn’t get past my own limiting anxiety. My husband suggested working in a salon space to get more experience, and I took his advice.
After working in two different salons, it became increasingly obvious that working for myself would be the only way that I could continue growing as a professional technician. Thus, Bloom Nails was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has NOT been a smooth ride! I enrolled into school right when the pandemic hit. There were so many new regulations and we weren’t able to practice on live clients. Performing services on a mannequin does not compare to the many different kinds of hands and feet that you’d come across in any work environment. I was completely lost when I serviced my first client! While we are taught some business practices, it didn’t cover an nth of the situations that you come across as a business owner. Real world experience trumps head knowledge any day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Bloom Nails is a black-owned nail salon planted in Sandy Springs, GA. We focus on safe, natural nail care while raising the bar for health and luxury in the beauty industry. We guarantee that your nails will bloom with one of our certified professionals. We offer polish and gel polish manicures, pedicures, and a number of enhancements-Dip, Après Gel-X, gel overlays, and sculpted manicures. Co-owner and licensed nail technician Tia, provides all services and has over two years of professional experience.

Cleanliness is the anchor of our business. We sanitize, disinfect, and sterilize all of our tools and only use files, buffers, and other porous implements once. Our tools are chosen with your health in mind: no cheese graters here!

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Believe it or not: I abhorred feet for the first 37 years of my life. Didn’t want to touch them, see them, smell them. Now, pedicures are my favorite service to perform! I want to transform allllll of the feet!
