Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiana and Mellani Madden.
Tiana and Mellani, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The mother and daughter duo, Tiana and Mellani Madden are from Harvey, IL. We moved to Lagrange, GA when Mellani was six months old in August 2013. We started Lady T & Mell Chanell when Mellani was three years old by making and posting funny videos on social media of us doing different challenges and dancing. In October 2019, I decided that it would be a good idea to create a lip balm business so that proceeds can go to Mellani’s college fund. That is when Mell Chanell Lip Balm was born! From November to December, we researched various ways to make lip balm with natural products. We then spent a lot of time trying to make the perfect lip balm that was colorful (because Mellani wanted to use rainbow powder) smelled terrific, and kept lips moisturized. We launched the product on January 20, 2020, a day before Mellani’s 7th birthday, and it has since been a hit! In February, Mell Chanell Lip Balm was reviewed live on the vegan social media influencer, Tabitha Brown’s “Very Good Mondays”. Since then, sales are now doubling.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road to develop and launch this product. I am currently receiving my master’s degree in an accelerated program while also working and managing our family-owned design, print, and media company. Trying to research and produce the lip balm caused many late nights for us. We also designed and print the business cards and labels that are on each pack, which takes some time. In the beginning, we struggled to properly market our product to customers. Sales did not come in as fast as we expected them too. It was a little disheartening because we worked hard on it.

Lady T & Mell Chanell are known for creating videos, but Mell Chanell Lip Balm is something that we are most proud of. It is a product that is made with natural oils, organic coconut oil, organic cocoa butter, and lip balm flavors that effectively moisturizes lips and creates a good long-lasting aroma. I think the thing that sets us apart from others is that we make the lip balm instead of ordering from vendors. We feel that it is better to create our product ourselves so that it is made out of love. Making the product continues to tap into our creative side, which was initially the reason why we created Lady T & Mell Chanell. And most importantly, the mother-daughter duo gets to spend some quality time together.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we had to start over, we would have started sooner with the preparation of this product, maybe a year in advance. The formula we use is not hard to make, but I think that we should have started sooner so that we didn’t have to stay up so many nights making lip balm since we were trying to launch around Mellani’s birthday.
