Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiberious Turner.
Tiberious, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Tiberious A keem Turner III, REALTOR & Florist. I started my company, Jardin Dê Gris, in August of this year, this year has been one to remember. I saw so much loss and darkness in the world, So many people losing loved ones and fighting for their life. I just knew I could do something to add a sense of happiness to the world. I always dreamed of opening a florist shop. A lot of people did not understand my passion and vision of what I saw of my life with flowers. I used my love of flowers and creative skills to design bouquets and Jardin Rose Bears. I took a leap of faith during the pandemic and quit my full-time job to go full-time with my floral business. I pondered on doing it for a week when I saw a tweet on Twitter that said, “Walk by faith, Not sight.”
In that moment, I took a breath and believed in my dreams and myself and parted ways with my job. Being a real estate agent and working a full-time job was exhausting. I now pour all my energy into my real estate business and my florist shop. Creating arrangements and seeing people express love through my creations has and continues to bring me so much joy. I still sit back, amazed and blown away that people really buy my art.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A lot of my struggles with starting a business were how do I want to convey my dream. How do I bring my vision to life? How do I do all of this on my own? What about my bills? I love financial freedom, but it is a double headed sword in away. I must budget and separate funds to run my business. I was not used to that; I was used to doing what I wanted when I wanted. I had to push myself out of my comfort zone, I had to really believe in myself and be confident in what I am doing. I stop asking for other’s opinions on different ideas. I went with my gut and did what I saw fit. I must be responsible and professional. I am still learning day by day.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jardin Dê Gris – what should we know?
Jardin Dê Gris is a flower shop (online). Jardin Dê Gris translates to the Garden of Grey in French. I remember in school we learned about King Louis and his palace of Versailles. The gardens in the palace were so beautiful. It had a certain je ne sais quoi. I knew that I wanted my business to be centered around that theme, so Jardin Dê Gris was birthed. I offer custom bouquets of colored roses, flower arrangements, Jardin Rose Bears. I would say my biggest seller currently is my Jardin Spooky Box w/ Spooky Berries.
It’s a Halloween themed box with black roses and chocolate-covered strawberries. I’m most proud of my 10-piece short stem box. It’s beautiful classic roses on the top and unfolds to a 1o piece of hot wings. I came up with the idea and knew I wanted to collaborate with a black chef to bring it to life. So, I collaborated with Only Pans to bring it to life. I believe that is what sets me apart from others is that I’m original and I put good energy and love as well as professionalism into my work. I’m young and black and I feel like there’s nothing I can’t do.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that confidence is the most important characteristic to my success. I do not see a lot of florists that look like me; young and black. Which is why I am determined to make my business a success. I used to be that person that would ask other opinions for validation, which is not a good thing. I began to be confident in my ideas and explore my thoughts and as a result, my company began to grow.
