Meet Tiffany Burgess

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Burgess.

Tiffany Elle Burgess has been writing short stories, children’s stories, and poetry since she was six years old. As a child, her favorite writing spot was underneath the dining room table. Writing has always been her passion and she hopes to inspire others with her words.

Ms. Burgess earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hampton University in 2001 and a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University in 2002. By day, she is a public health consultant. By night, she is a writer. In August 2016, Ms. Burgess released her first children’s book, “Skin Like Mine”. “Skin Like Mine” was well received and featured in the February 2017 issue of Essence magazine. It can also be found on essence.com under “The Compact: 5 Bits of Beauty We’re Obsessed With This Month” for January 2017. In 2017, Ms. Burgess became a Huffington Contributor. Her previous articles can be found here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/author/tiffany-elle-burgess. In 2018, Ms. Burgess wrote her first article for the online magazine, Blavity.

In addition to writing children’s books and contributing to online publications, Ms. Burgess is a screenwriter. She and fellow Hampton University alums, Jack Manning, III and Lawrence “LAW” Watford, formed Tyler Street Films. Their first short film, Flipped, was completed in March 2018 (www.flippedindiefilm.com) and was screened at the 2018 Newark International Film Festival. The team has more projects in the works for 2019.

In 2019, Ms. Burgess will also release her second children’s book, “The Adventures of Spencer and Baby Brother”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a writer, I have experienced everything from rejection to Writer’s Block. It comes with the territory in my opinion. One must be thick skinned and remain focused. At the end of the day, trust that it will all work out.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a freelance writer. I have written two children’s books and the screenplay for a short film. I have also contributed to online publications, such as The Huffington Post and Blavity.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I don’t believe anyone ever accomplishes anything great on his/her own. I, first, must thank God. Without him, none of this would be possible. When I released my first children’s book, Skin Like Mine, I worked with an awesome publisher, Tiffany Goode of Goode Stuff Publishing, and a very talented illustrator, Takeia Marie. The book would not have been as successful without them.

Regarding the short film, Flipped, I have two amazing partners, Jack Manning, III, and Lawrence “LAW” Watford. Together, we have formed Tyler Street Films. Jack is the creative genius behind the film. I served as the screenwriter/co-producer, and Lawrence served as the director/co-producer. The film has been well received and the first of many!
