Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Denise Hobbs.
Tiffany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mother placed me in dance and gymnastics classes in Augusta, GA at the age of three- that is where my love of performing introduced itself. I attended John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School from 5th through 12th grade, where I first began to take intensive acting classes (and I, of course, loved it). I was in several productions at school and I also attended theater conferences and competitions and won a few awards. I attended the University of Georgia for undergrad, where I performed in many shows and procured my BA in Theatre and my ABJ in Public Relations. I also spent a summer Yale University, as I was selected to attend their Summer Conservatory for Actors. I attended Southern Methodist University for my Masters in Fine Arts in Acting, after which I was asked to join the resident Acting Company at the Dallas Theater Center, where I appeared in several mainstage productions. After my time in Dallas, I found myself booking the principal role of Shenzi in the National Tour of the Broadway musical, The Lion King. After two years on the road, I left the tour and based myself in Atlanta, where I began co-starring in television series and appeared in August Wilson’s King Hedley II as Tonya at Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre (my second time appearing in a show at the his theater). Currently, I am on Broadway appearing the musical, Waitress, spear-headed by Sara Bareilles, Jessie Nelson and Diane Paulus.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Haha. Not. At. All. The journey, for me, has not been direct or void of some turbulence at times. I had to start paving my own way from the beginning, as I come from a family of academics. There was a lot of throwing myself out there and waiting to see what stuck. I did much consulting outside of my immediate village and figured out a lot of the ways of the business- and how I wanted to fit into it- on my own. There were several unknowns for me, so I did everything I could to keep the faith while I went alone down a road “less traveled” and, at times, stumbled. Thankfully, however, I have met so many artists on this journey who have been able to show me the way and guide me. Without the massive guidance from the artistic community I have built and the love and support from my family, I would not be where I am today.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tiffany Denise Hobbs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Acting has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl and I am overjoyed that I have been so fortunate to do this professionally every day. I got to co-star alongside Donald Glover in his series, “Atlanta”, this season, which was pretty spectacular. I am also co-starring in the upcoming second season of a popular Netflix series, about which I am honored. I have had a substantial career in regional theater, including working at two Tony Award-winning theaters. And I have now worked on two Broadway shows (one touring the North America and, now, one in the heart of New York City on Broadway). This list just keeps growing.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m just looking forward to growing as an artist every day. I expect to continue growing my résumé, experience and outreach as time moves on. I expect to play bigger, juicer and longer-lived roles over time, in television, film and in theater. I also plan to produce and direct down the line. I believe that will come in a way that is most appropriate for me. So, right now, I am just preparing to receive it.
