Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Morris.
Hi Tiffany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Kisha Malone and I started Luckie Libra as a way to empower women by creating more awareness and love toward one’s body. While assisting our distributor (located in Ghana) with festivals here in Atlanta, we witnessed first hand the transnational affect the beads had on the women as we tied them around their waist. It was at that point we decided to start distributing waist beads as a way for women to connect with our African heritage and provide an overall sense of beauty no matter their size or age.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We have had many challenges along the way. We launched Luckie Libra in 2020, so the Pandemic posed a huge challenge especially as an unknown brand. In the initial business model, we planned to use Atlanta’s festival season to grow locally and attract new customers. We had plans to vend at some of the most popular jazz and art festivals in the city and several HBCU homecoming tailgates in the area. Due to Shelter in Place Orders and gathering limits around the city, all the major festivals were canceled. Like so many other businesses, we have had to pivot and get creative. We set up our own pop-up shops in different parts of the city like East Atlanta and Little Five Points. We also partner with other local businesses for vending opportunities. Now I look back and I am so excited to see what we have been able to accomplish during one of the most difficult years in recent history.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Luckie Libra’s main product is our Traditional Tie-on Waist Beads. Waist beads have a rich history in Africa, dating back to Ancient Egypt. Traditionally, waist beads were worn as a symbol of social status and to signal that a girl has transitioned into womanhood. Today, women wear waist beads for many reasons, including weight management, sensuality, and spiritual purposes. We offer a high-quality selection of styles and colors, but our authenticity and sense of community is what really sets Luckie Libra apart from other brands. Each strand of our handmade waist beads ship direct to us from Ghana. By supporting Luckie Libra, our customers are supporting several small women-owned businesses from our distributor to the Ghanaian Women that thread the strands.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Kisha and I met at freshmen orientation at Albany State University. During our introduction, we realized our subdivisions were literally across the street from each other. Needless to say our mothers were already making plans for us carpooling back and forth to Atlanta lol. We became college roommates and have been friends for nearly 20 years. One of the reasons we are so passionate about the brand is that, being HBCU graduates, we are very proud of our culture. Finding a way to connect others to that culture is important to us. Also, we are both Libras hence the company name Luckie Libra.
