Meet Tim Furlow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Furlow.

Hi Tim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Since I was a child, I created art. From crafts to sketches to sculptures. I love it all. So, it was only fitting that when tattooing fell in my lap back in 2009, I picked it up and took off running! It wasn’t glitz and glam at first, I was a scratcher for about a two years. When I was tired of doing less than mediocre tattoos, I acquired an apprenticeship. I spent the next two years absorbing as much tattoo knowledge as I could. After completing my formal training, I left the nest and traveled for three years, continuing my tattoo/art education. In 2018 I moved back home to settle in Atlanta. Fast forward to now, I’m tattooing at Black Owl Tattoo, creating art/tattoos having the best time of my life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth road? Hell no. I embrace the struggles. Anything that challenges you makes you stronger in my opinion. Being black in this industry, you’re faced with racism from both sides. You have White tattooers that feel like you don’t belong and potential clients who think you can’t tattoo because of the color of your skin. I will say enduring the rough road has made my current path smoother than a pimps velvet belt.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a tattooer by trade. I tattoo most styles and all skin tones. I’m also a published illustrator (Dear Mom, You Don’t Get To Have Nice Things). Here recently, I’ve had the opportunity to create storyboards for commercials, movies and performances. What sets me apart? I would have to say I don’t know a tattooer that does ALL of that other than me.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Surprise! I love and play golf!
