Today we’d like to introduce you to Tione Blume.
Tione, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Mrs. Blume’s Bakery was developed from a stress release tactic. Whenever I had a rough day at work, I would come home and start baking. It became such a habit that my husband would say “uh-oh” when he came home to a house covered in flour. I started posting some of my baked goods on social media and my cousin suggested I open a bakery. I thought it was funny at first and then, I realized there was a market for fresh baked goods. When I went on maternity leave I decided it was time to start my bakery and with the support of my husband, my parents, my sister and my cousin I was able to make my dream a reality.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road for a baker is always rough. especially if you don’t have any formal training. I’ve had melted cakes, tilted cakes, fallen cakes, and burnt cakes but, I made sure I kept going. Starting a business with no established customers meant handing out a lot of free cakes. I’m pretty sure my first year I spent more money than I made.
Please tell us about Mrs. Blume’s Bakery.
Here, at Mrs. Blume’s Bakery, I firmly believe that the best things in life are made with LOVE! With that being said I like to treat my client’s with love and respect and make them feel like family. I bake cakes, cookies, and pastries and a few treats. I am well known for my chocolate croissants and my flavored puffcorn. I am most proud of the fact that in my teens I would burn water, but not anymore! Now, I create delicious treats for everyone! What sets me apart from others is that everything is made from scratch, from the fondant to the croissant dough and everything in between. I believe that is the only way to feel the love when you eat my treats.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Compton, CA, we didn’t have much money, the one thing we did have was a lemon tree. I have always had a “boss” mentality even when I was a child. One day, my little sister and I decided we were going to sell lemonade so we could buy junk from the ice cream truck. We had lemons and water, My grandmother wouldn’t allow us to use the sugar because “it cost money and we didn’t pay no bills!” So, my sister and I attempted to sale lemon water with the seeds to our neighbors! Of course, no one bought anything, but this small event has set me up for a life of business adventures and I am forever grateful.
