Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiya Rabb.
Tiya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It wasn’t until my freshman year of college, where I was introduced to web design by my RA. He was busy working on his website project for the computer programming class we were all required to take, usually in our junior year. Until that point, I had no idea that regular people, let alone students my age and people that I knew, had the access, let alone the ability to create websites. Just to give you an idea of the time-frame, AOL was still handing out Free Trial CDs like candy. I was immediately immersed in the world of web design.
I later changed my major to computer programming and began my journey as a system engineer or application developer, but I am always honing my design skills. After over a decade in the professional arena, I decided to take my chances in the world of self-employment/business ownership. Since I made that move, I haven’t looked back. With huge support from leaders in the community and powerful business owners, I’ve been able to grow my business steadily.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road certainly has not been smooth. I’ve had to grow in areas that I didn’t even know exist, learn aspects of a business that I had not experienced, and make sacrifices that no one I know would have made. I have had to figure things out on my own, like so many others. Of course, finances is always an issue; so my story is no different. I was blowing through savings and retirement just to remain afloat during the initial stages.
Other challenges were unexpected, such as the adjustments my family had to make as they support me. It took a while for my folks to really get that “I work ALL OF THE TIME” lol! Initially, they took my new found, seeming availability as free time, but after much coaching and explaining, they began to understand.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rabb Consulting story. Tell us more about the business.
My business, Rabb Consulting, is a digital design and marketing consulting company. Our services are planted in digital estates (web sites, social media accounts, digital music and other digital assets), marketing, content management, graphic design and branding services.
I also created and managed the Atlanta-centered LGBTQ news and media social platform ATLGBTQ. I created this because there was a dire need to show and allow people to express aspects of queer people of color. Since its start, it has become a go-to network hub for LGBTQ businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs and to share their stories, services and learn from others. I am known for creating professional, top-notch websites, pretty cool logos, and growing strong consumer bases using social media for small businesses and entrepreneurs in the entertainment and tech industries. My quality of work and down-to-earth approach, I believe, is what sets me apart.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry as a whole has been in a shift toward artificial intelligence, robotics, and bionics for several years now. Automation will continue to be a goal for small businesses, while enterprises will continue to stay ahead with AI and robotics. I don’t see many shifts, though I question if the pandemic was the catalyst that was needed to get corporations to allow remote work.
