Today we’d like to introduce you to Toya Exnicious.
Toya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for teaching and touching people started in 2001 when my sister and I hosted a small group/bible study for young adults in our home & hotel meeting rooms. It was a small start, but we would rent vans and pick up young adults in order to attend our events. It was my first taste of what it feels like to impact lives through conversation and teaching. From there, I went on to work with middle school and high school students in youth ministry at my church, World Changers Church International. While there I started a mentorship program for teen girls and that was the season of my life where I finally understood what I was called to do…impact the lives of women (of all ages). Working with teen girls absolutely changed my life.
To see life, love, spirituality, and all other things through the eyes of teenagers was eye-opening. I wanted to do more. While listening to all of the teen girl problems and issues, I would often think, “I know adult women with that exact same challenge, mindset, insecurity, etc..”. With that, it was only a matter of time before I expanded my vision of impact to include adult women. That’s when “Wear the Skirt” was born. “Wear the Skirt” was a movement that I started with the idea of encouraging women to embrace their womanhood (good, bad, ugly, indifferent). In other words, “Wear the Skirt” and not the pants. All of those experiences have shaped the work that I do today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A smooth road? Do those exist? It definitely has not been a smooth road. Following a dream or a calling that only you can see is tough. You’re often misunderstood, judged, thought to be crazy, and so on. Not to mention keeping your faith, finding resources to do what you see, maintaining relationships while pursuing your dreams, etc… It’s all very tough. But necessary.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is strategically focused on the empowerment of women (of all ages). Our main focus is to teach women to live wild, free, and unapologetic. We have hosted countless events, teach online course, and travel the world encouraging women. I love the way our company offers a fresh and innovative perspective on being a woman of God. We don’t sugar coat things and we’re often found in the court of unpopular opinion, but we fit perfectly there. It’s our thing.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a very quiet observer. Ironically, with as much speaking as I do now, I didn’t speak much. Actually, I wasn’t very outspoken at all. I always had an interest in things like fashion and makeup. School was never really that interesting to me, just a means to an end. I did well in school, but definitely not because I put forth my best effort.
