Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracee Carter-Grant.
Tracee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved to decorate and design since, I can remember, My family and friends would always ask me to help them decorate their house, decorate parties or ask for advice about colors for paint. My sister, Yvonne Carter-Green has always told me I would be a great interior designer and that was my gift. Well, I went to college and got my degree in Early Childhood education. As I continued working as Childcare owner, Director and then elementary school teacher, I began focusing on weddings and events.
My first wedding was in 2007, helping my friend, Mena Murph with her cousin’s wedding in Opelika, Alabama. That was like the longest day of my life. We tied 200 sashes, just us. We decorated the church and the venue. I thought that day was never going to be over. However, my determination to help my friend with this event gave me motivation and encouragement to step out on faith.
Before I decided to step out on faith, I continued decorating family and friend houses using my creativity and knowledge, I learned by watching HGTV. However, watching David Tutera, Bridezilla, looking in Bridal Magazines, attending bridal shows had an impact on my business decision. I would watch, listen and gather ideas. My childhood friend had begun her business and asked me if I wanted to be a part of her business. Of course, I said yes, but I can’t even remember what happened, but we never got a chance to work together.
After closing my daycare business in Opelika, Alabama and moving back to Columbus, Georgia. I began working on Creations by Tracee’. In 2009, I wanted to combine my creativity, organizational skills, design and planning of special events, in which Creations by Tracee’ was founded.
I love to develop personal relationships with my clients that eventually become just like family. I believe that is the key to providing a unique and different special occasion. I am very detailed when planning, which keeps the focus on the smallest aspects, which can sometimes be the most important when planning my client’s dream day or event.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anytime you have a business, you will have some struggles along the way. My first struggle was walking by faith, not by sight. I started the business in 2009, but I did not try to advertise or do much business because I was in a transition in my life. I had closed one business, single mom, working full-time, in school part-time, gaining an advanced degree in education and a new city. So, where would this clientele come from? So, I put the business aside and concentrated on parenting and my career as an educator. However, still decorating for family and friends, not understanding what God was getting ready to do in my life. In 2017, a friend asked me to decorate for a social club luncheon for about fifty people. That event was a success from there. I got another phone call about decorating for a 50th birthday party in a small town outside of Columbus, Georgia for about 150 people. The business began to grow in Columbus, Georgia. I decided to open an office space/planning boutique. My vision for this space was just heaven sent. However, I struggle with myself when it comes to making sure. My clients are happy with their event.
