Today we’d like to introduce you to Trae Morris.
Trae, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been musically interested and inclined for as long as I can remember. I started singing as a child in the church choir. However, in 2014, is when things became a bit more serious. While I was living in Charleston, SC, I began working with Michelle P. Warren for Artist Development. Later that same year, I co-wrote and released “Deeper,” my first single. Shortly thereafter, I was blessed to land a small acting role in a stage play “Life Isn’t Fair,” written and Directed by Derrell Lawrence. In 2015, after a successful music showcase hosted by Tara from Love and Hip Hop and highlighting my single “Deeper”, I decided to relocate to Atlanta to focus more on my music career. Since moving here, I connected and worked briefly with Jay Productions Agency on some PR campaigns. Through this PR Firm, I was introduced to “Those Guys Music” comprised of singer/songwriters Amore Jones, Steven Ashley, and Grammy-winning Producer, Jeremiah Adkins. Under their guidance, I’ve released two more singles “End The Night” and my most recent and most successful single “The Door”. Where I am now? Well, most recently, I released a visual for “The Door” in honor of the one year anniversary release; I’ve starred in “Memoir’s of Single Mothers” the stage play, currently doing background acting work on Pussy Valley, which debuts on Starz this fall, and I’ve joined the cast of “On the way up, ATL” a reality series based around the lives of creatives and entrepreneurs in the Metro Atlanta, and surrounding area’s.
The journey has been a roller coaster! From one meeting to the next, I keep being introduced to individuals that are next level and climbing that staircase has been exciting. Some days I think back to being a college grad working in a phone store and then see how far I have come and the great people that have been placed in my path to help me get to where I am today. The journey is just beginning and I am excited for where I am headed.
Has it been a smooth road?
Speaking candidly, it’s been HELL. Fans and supporters see blog interviews, showcase performances, photo shoot edits, red carpet appearances, and hear great music and cheer. However, there have been a lot of obstacles, setbacks, empty bank accounts, restless nights, empty venues, & lost money just to name a few. Those are the things the outside world DOESN’T see a lot of. People will host events, and pay everyone on the ticket EXCEPT the artist. Not all, but a lot of promoters want an artist to perform for “exposure” and unfortunately, exposure does not pay GA power nor does it pay the producers or people we work with that help us put out this great content that caught your attention, to begin with. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t trade a single experience. It has helped me grow, make smarter decisions, pace myself, become a better artist, and businessman. It’s taught me patience for sure.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
In addition to music and acting, I have also started an apparel line. What started out as a way to identify my team during photo or video shoots and the events kinda took off on its own. People started inboxing me asking where they could purchase the #teamtrae shirts. As a result of that, I kick-started my apparel line with those shirts which are currently available for purchase through my website www.traemorris.com and click the apparel tab.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Atlanta is a great place for young artist/entrepreneurs/creatives to start out. If someone is starting out, new to the city, and isn’t sure what to do, get out and network. Click the hashtag’s on social media, figure out where an open mic is happening and show up. EVERY-TIME the doors swing open if you have the opportunity show up, show off your craft. Work that room, figure out who is in the room make genuine connections. One of the best things you can do is connect with another young creatives or entrepreneurs that areas hungry as you are. It’s a recipe for success to be with like-minded individuals.
