Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Guice.
Angel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I can remember entertaining, spreading love, and making people feel good has always been a part of me. From talent shows to fashion shows to dancing to theatre to poetry to acting, wherever there is music, and people happily expressing themselves through any of these activities, you’d find me. It wasn’t until the tender age of 30 when I had a serious conversation with God and asked the question, “God why am I here?” Now, this question came because I was tired of just existing and faking the funk of being happy living outside of my calling. That’s when God showed me that I had been walking in my purpose all along but I just had not recognized my power and spiritual influence upon people.
Now, that I understand how God wants to use me, I am able to do all that I was created to do and am currently preparing for my One Woman Show Tour in the fall of this year!!!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Man the struggle has been absolutely real lol. One of my favorite quotes is: “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option.” I remember a time when I didn’t think I had a testimony because when I heard other peoples stories and what they had been through, it just sounds like I was complaining because they had been through way worse than I could imagine. Then, God whispered, “Ok, I’ll give you a testimony.” Man, oh man, why did I make that wish. In 2017, my little world came tumbling down, I turned 30 (midlife crisis) went through a breakup, changed careers, and decided to leave my family and friends to follow my dream as an actress in Los Angeles. I immediately got a job as a waitress and went on the hunt to find the perfect acting class. Watching all the other talented actors in the class and learning the business side of things created some doubt in my talent as an artist. On top of the challenges, I was already facing and learning what we had to go through as artists in terms of social media and auditions. I also had to deal with the fact of what was happening in the real world in terms of all the killings, crimes, homelessness, poverty, politics, and people just hurting people. Seeing all of this got me in a depressed state of mind and instead of expressing myself through my art I shut down completely and started therapy. I was somewhat nervous at first because in our community seeking help from a therapist means that you’re crazy. But I must admit with the help and encouragement of my family, friends, and therapist, things started to get back on track for me and my One Woman Show “Through My Eyes was born.
The one piece of advice that I’d like to give to other women is to always stay true to yourself, create the opportunities that you don’t see and my favorite quote:
“Live on purpose live out loud, you weren’t created to follow the crowd- Angel Guice.”
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
To be honest, evetime this question is asked of me I become somewhat hesitant to answer because there was a point in my life when I didn’t know who I was, where I belonged or even my purpose for that matter. Also, I didn’t want to be labeled or placed in a box. I am so gifted in many areas and there isn’t just one thing that brings me joy. I am well-respected Actress, Poet, Choreographer, Inspirational Artist, Writer, and now Producer in my community. But one thing that feeds my spirit and soul is hearing how I’ve touched or changed someone’s life through my performances or through my writing. The one thing that I’m most proud of is having the courage to step out on faith and walk in my purpose even when it looks scary at times and I’m somewhat fearful of the unknown, I know that God has my back and I trust him and his word completely, and believe me that trust didn’t happen overnight. My work on this earth is to spread love to people who are broken and shed light to those in dark places through my artistry. I believe that is what sets me apart from others and there is absolutely no one person in this world who was created to do exactly what I can do the way I do it!!!!
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe that women can do absolutely anything and lately I’ve seen women happily creating their own opportunities where there may be lack. Yes, I believe that women are faced with some difficult challenges but I also believe we have the power to change and create what we want to see. When I attended Talladega College, there was a time where all I saw in the small community was teenage pregnancy, people harming and hurting one another, and little opportunities for us to grow. Instead of complaining or becoming another statistic, I used my gift as a choreographer and dancer to open up The Angel Guice Dance Ensemble where I taught Hip Hop, African, Modern, Liturgical, Mime, Ballet, and Dance Aerobics for the adults. I wanted to create a space for students to come and express themselves freely in a more positive way. I created an opportunity for me, for them, for us so that we could all win!!!

Thanks for your sincere honesty, Angel. It’s not easy admitting certain truths about oneself. I admire those who are brave enough to do so.
In the long run, it will (bravery) be the foundation of your continued success. Be kind, be good, be BRAVE!
