Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Reap.
Carrie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always loved makeup. Growing up, my parents worked 9-5 jobs, and after school, I would always go through my mom’s makeup. I was so amazed when I would watch my mom do her makeup. In high school, I loved art and thought I’d grow up to be an artist. I began watching YouTube videos when I was 21 years old, and I fell in love. My first palette was by Urban Decay, and it had six eyeshadows in it. I will always remember it. After watching so many YouTube videos, I decided to start @makeupbycarrrie on Instagram. I posted 5-6 times a week different looks on my face. It was a way for me to express my creativity. Eventually, brands started liking my posts and would repost me which made me even more motivated. Family and friends really encouraged me as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a pretty smooth road. Hopefully, it stays that way! At first, I was shy to put myself out on the internet like that… and I still am. I just woke up one day and decided what did I have to lose? That would be my biggest advice to young women. Stop doubting yourself and just do what makes you happy. It sounds super cliche but it’s true. If you have talent let the world know it!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a beauty blogger and freelance makeup artist. I specialize in bridal makeup. Most of my clients are brides. I don’t know exactly what I am known for by the public. I am most proud that I can apply makeup to all skin tones and that I am very passionate about my skill. I make it a point to always learn new techniques and to always keep learning. I really love enhancing people’s beauty. Seeing my client’s face light up after I am done applying their makeup really fills me with joy.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Word of mouth has worked extremely well for me. Posting my looks on social media and asking my followers to share my posts. I think consistently posting on social media is important as well. As far as networking, be confident in your work and let people know!
