Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Thompson.
Heather, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Everything began when I was a teenager. Friends used to ask me for advice, and though I loved helping them, I typically thought, “Why are you asking me?” As an adult, I discovered the answer when I dreamed one night of a large compass rose appearing in the sky over a peach-tinted sunset. This happened while, in real life, I was wondering how to become a life coach after hearing about it for the first time. I thought the dream was strange, and days later, it still haunted me while I researched life coaching schools online. I found a training and certification program with a design format that stopped me in my tracks: a peach color scheme with a compass rose for their branding. It was the confirmation I needed. That program was out of my budget, but I enrolled in training elsewhere. I began coaching in 2015, and I’ve been loving it ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the answers may change as we develop. Being a business owner isn’t just a title – it’s a calling and a process that comes with maturity. You’re “becoming,” so to speak. This has not been a smooth road. My path to coaching was filled with two unexpected job layoffs, and they both happened while I was pregnant. My husband was/is an amazing supporter during this process, but I also had to find resolve within myself through prayer, learning from other entrepreneurs, and a great deal of working while waiting. My advice is simple: stay employed, if you can, to fund your dream while living your life and remaining prepared for emergencies. Get a good circle of people who can encourage and positively challenge your development as a business owner and individual. Both sides matter! Also, take your cues from people who understand your values. If you mirror your life after a workaholic who doesn’t maintain any of their relationships and you want to keep your family and/or health first, then you will begin to align your belief system with theirs. No lasting good will come from that. Be flexible to change, but remain true to yourself.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a transformation life coach, and I focus on being a transition specialist for my clients. We’re in a time where women mention being “bosses” quite often. We want to appear calm and focused on “securing the bag” by any means. Unfortunately, the path to getting there is often fueled by unhealed childhood/teenage issues from our families, bad relationships, and/or a drive to “achieve-announce-make ‘em applaud” for everything we do. This, in short, is validation-seeking fueled by rejection and entitlement without even knowing why we do it. My focus is on helping to create peace by discovery – helping clients understand the root of any issues while reaching their goals and being grounded in responsibility along the way. I also focus on helping business-minded, faith-based wives and moms achieve success in all areas, including family and household management. I currently have four e-books available online, and in 2019, I’ll be releasing more online courses and e-books/workbooks to help people reach their goals, even if they can’t work with me directly. And what I’m most proud of? My first client who, after our first coaching call, was able to spare 11 jobs in her department and successfully got off of two medications due to excessive workplace stress. I’m still grateful for that moment.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
The Bible is my first resource, and always will be. Additionally, reading “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho was a game-changer for me last year. For apps that help with business, I love Planoly, Instagram and Canva. NPR’s podcast, “This American Life, as well as Doug Addison, Lewis Howes, and Nicole Walters’ podcasts are my favorites right now. My inspiration is diverse, as you can see!
