Meet Trailblazer Jamie Malfeo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Malfeo.

Jamie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Becoming a hairdresser was actually not my intention starting out, and I never thought I would be doing what I am today. After I graduated high school, I went to college to become a pharmacist. I realized after a few years that was not the right path for me.

I’ve always been artistic since I was a kid and felt that a career in the creative field was where I belonged. I went to art school and got my Bachelors Degree in graphic design, but I still didn’t feel fulfilled in what I was doing. The idea of sitting at a desk all day, every day staring at a computer screen with limited human interaction was not that exciting to me.

One of my best friends at the time had just gone through the cosmetology program at Paul Mitchell. I would go there to have her do my hair and was blown away by the excitement in all the students there, it had this amazing energy that I wanted to be a part of and that’s when I fell in love with the idea of being behind the chair.

I decided to enroll and on my first day, I instantly knew that this was where I belonged and what I wanted to do.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest challenges we face in the beauty industry is becoming “burnt out.” that’s a real term that many hairdressers say at some point in their career. We talk to many clients in a day, are constantly trying to keep up with the latest trends and techniques. We are also making sure to take time out of the salon to market our services on social media and always having business cards ready to go in every social situation. Because the work itself can be repetitive and be stressful on the body as well, we have to remember to take time for ourselves once in a while, so we can be the best for our clients.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Adore Hair Studio – what should we know?
