Today we’d like to introduce you to Judi “Jai” Jackson.
Judi became a reality tv star sensation when the Bunim Murray produced hit show “Bad Girls Club New Orleans: season 7”, her season, also voted the fan fave season, aired in late summer of 2011 on the Oxygen Network. Her popularity landed her several spin-offs such as “Love Games” season 3, a dating competition show which she won, “Bad Girls All Star Battle” season 1 hosted by platinum-selling artist Ray J, which she came in 6th place out of 14, “Bad Girls Club 13: Redemption” and a show non bad girl related called “Ex-Besties” hosted by E! correspondent Sibley Scoles and produced by Fly on the Wall Ent. During all of her shows, she started her “Vixen” business very humbly. She named it Vixen because she was coined as the “Voodoo Vixen” of Bad Girls Club. She started out with t-shirts and lip glosses/lipsticks, then expanded on to mink lashes, nail polish, clothing, shot glasses with her logo, life size voodoo dolls like the infamous one she had as a sidekick on her debut season, jewelry, bath products, Sage, candles and much more! She now has her very own hot sauce named “Judi’s Voodoo Juice”, which honors her Creole culture which she is very proud of. It also goes along with her first fiction book, “FOU”, which is dedicated to her parents who passed away. All book proceeds go to Lung Cancer awareness. The book holds some of her moms Creole recipes from family cookbooks, and you can use her hot sauce on the finished meals.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road. Sometimes, products didn’t sell as well as others. Other times, people you are working with will let you down and make you look crazy. My advice is to have amazing packaging. Usually, the buyer decides if they want to buy it by just one glance at the outside image of the product. Although beauty is within, the same values don’t apply when you are selling merch. The logo, the packaging, is everything. Also, try to cancel out the middle man and have total control. It’s YOUR brand and business after all.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Vixen, LLC. – what should we know?
Aside from being an author and a reality tv star, I’m an actress with an IMDb credit from my role, a host, an artist (I draw, paint, make music, etc, published model, and a radio personality with my own show “The Juice with Judi Jai” on WGTSDB. I also have another tv appearance airing in the fall and a project coming out with the infamous Dr. Jeff that you have seen everywhere on your TVs. I also have a few ongoing charities, and I am in partnership with PETA. My brand is targeted towards girls who are spiritual and loves glitter, and super unique products like strawberries and champagne sugar whipped soap, or Sage sticks made out of flowers. I am a huge foodie, an actual food blogger and I like to tie in foods, autumn, and my Creole roots any way I can.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Absolutely. I was raised as an only child and my parents kept me busy. From art to dance like ballet tap and jazz, to piano… to high school playing basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, I was very outgoing. My mother always made homer videos too and I was, of course, the star. That’s how I am not camera shy. Both of my parents are college educated, Masters, and my dad owned his own trucking company called “WE JAC Inc.” He also was partners with Hennessy, Johnny Walker Red, and was named one of the most successful black men in Ebony Magazine in the 90s. My parents were very successful. I joined newspaper in high school too and that led me to go to Columbia College Chicago which is one of the biggest media arts schools in the nation. Some of my family also went there and was very successful on the news, and in other broadcast journalism type jobs. I am very blessed. Forever thankful.
