Meet Trailblazer Kayla King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla King.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I come from a family of entrepreneurs and ministers. My mom owned a daycare for many years while my dad pastored a church in Queens, NY before we moved down south. I’ve always taken my parents’ example of integrity and hard work to heart and I believe this perspective shaped my passion. I am a youth/music minister and I have my very own hair business. I work for myself and I impact lives while doing it, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest struggle to date has been fighting self-doubt. What other people think doesn’t matter because the loudest voice in you hear can sometimes be your own. I’ve always had a passion for hair, music, and my community. It was clear to me what I wanted my career path to be. Executing that plan came with a lot of self-encouragement, affirming myself, and knowing that what I have to offer this world matters!

We’d love to hear more about Beautied By Kay.
I specialize in braiding extensions – box braids, crochet, goddess locs, knotless braids – you name it, I do it! What I love most about braiding is the culture behind it. There is so much in black history that is lost, but braiding has stood the test of time. I love it! What sets me apart as a braider is how the client is treated and considered. Because these styles can take a very extended amount of time, I offer a travel service to come to my clients so that they are as comfortable as possible. I also love the relationships that I have formed over the years. My customer service is what I take pride in the most!

I also host a faith-based youth group service on Wednesday nights as well as leading worship for local churches. It is so important to me to touch people with the gifts God has given to me; it is incredibly rewarding! I will pour into the hearts of others until my last breath.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Definitely! As I mentioned before, my parents were huge inspos to me. Never once did I think owning my own business wasn’t possible because I saw it done. I knew I wouldn’t do well working for someone else because being in charge of my own time and income is non-negotiable for me. I thrive off of that freedom. I watched my mom be her own boss for years and kill it! I honestly don’t think I would have been as confident in my business if I didn’t see her be confident in hers first. My parents have always supported and stood behind me in so many ways through my journey, and I’m forever grateful!
