Meet Trailblazer Kristina Cooper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Cooper.

Kristina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a young girl, I had this whole life plan for myself, but then real life hits and you’re like… how the heck did I get here. I had to figure out a way to utilize my natural talents and abilities to create my own lane to travel down. I was laid off from a Director’s position in my field of Healthcare, and I did not like the feeling of having my well-being in the hands of an employer, so I thought to myself… what can I do? I went back home to Miami with my loving parents and did some soul searching. I thought back to those dreams as a little girl of being in business for myself and wanting to be “in front” of the camera and ultimately decided on a game plan. Playing around with you-tube tutorials, selling Mary Kay and whatever else I could do, I taught myself everything I could on my own, I’ve always admired style and beauty and this was the perfect time for me to truly be ME as I had recently stepped into my own as an individual. My good friend encouraged me to come to Atlanta and I did just that to see what I could do with this new found purpose in life. I was no doubt scared and didn’t know what I would do or how I was going to accomplish being a business woman and doing my own thing. God really looked out for me and I was blessed enough to connect with Necee Cooper (GoGo Party Bus), who is a Boss herself, here in ATL! She made it possible for me to get technical training and even started a business (U GO Glam) with me in mind. Every business takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears and I did what I knew to do, I’m grateful for that opportunity and I’m being optimistic about the future and business partnerships. She will forever be a friend and mentor to me. There’s nothing like having someone believe in you, trust me.

During that time, I was also working at Nordstrom and I met another creative (Fatiyha Johnson/Style Provoking) who helps keep me on my toes, lol. She’s a dope wardrobe stylist and I’ve been able to network and do things I’ve never thought possible with her help. I currently freelance with Spin Style and I take private bookings by appointment only. I’ve had opportunities to work with major artists, like H.E.R and even major networks like NBC Universal. 2019 is a year of expansion, I’m looking to extend my services and provide products. It’s been a roller coaster ride, but I’ve loved every twist and turn. I’ve had the support of great friends and family, who have been behind me throughout this whole process. I know I have so far to go, but it feels good to go thru the process and accepting the No’s and the knock-downs and the emotional stress of it all. Kristina Amanda Beauty is only the beginning.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve cried so many days/nights, I’ve thought about giving up and I’ve even doubted myself but the trick is to stop being in our own way. To young girls just starting, don’t let what others are doing or not doing, deter you from what’s in your heart. There are times when you’ll be scared about the future, but you have to stay positive and take it one step at a time. You have to recognize your own strength and keep grinding. Learn from as many people as possible along the way.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a freelance Makeup artist, and I specialize in Commercial, Editorial and natural make-up application for the everyday woman. I’m in love with soft glam and flawless, rich skin. What I’m most proud of as a brand is the ability to connect with people and see it blossom into something greater and simply evolve through the process. Having had the chance to work for major brands, work on set… it’s simply amazing to me. Right now, I’m focused on expanding and have my brand gain more visibility

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
There’s something to be said about a woman in power, she just looks, walks and talks different. One collective barrier is being a strong woman and because of it, you’re considered a “b****” but then you can’t be too weak, or you’ll be walked over. The entrepreneur side of the beauty industry does have a lot of females in power, so it is more welcoming than other industries. You have to stand your ground and mean business. Make people take you seriously.
