Meet Trailblazer Krystal Ketcham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Ketcham.

Krystal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from Columbus State University, I had no idea on how to become a correspondent. I remember someone saying, “Sometimes, you have to take a different route to get to where you want to be.” I took that as a sign, so I thought maybe I should intern for a publicist. I searched the hashtag, #PR, and found an intern wanted a post on Lille Mae Pr page. I interned with Lillie Mae Pr and learned so much about media and reaching out to different publications. Working with Lilllie helped me to land my next internship with a magazine publication. Working with that publication, I was able to interview Rico Nasty and many more people. After six months, I left the magazine publication and met Jae Nash. Jae really helped me to become the media personality I am today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to get where I’m at today was the furthest from smooth. I’ve heard so many nos and received over 100 rejection letters from broadcasting companies. It seemed like all of my emails to producers and talent went unanswered. The best advice I can give someone pursuing a career in journalism is to keep going and don’t compare yourself to anyone. The right people will notice you and will want to help you.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a freelance media correspondent. I am most proud of how far I’ve come. I remember watching the BET Awards in awe and now to be able to work the red carpet is unbelievable. I think what sets me apart from others is my mindset. Journalism is not an easy field, but I refuse to quit.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
As a child, I thought I wanted to be a brain surgeon. In high school, I discovered my love for media. I would skip lunch to watch and edit videos. I loved writing the anchor scripts and watching the segment come together.
