Meet Trailblazer Krystal Rae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Rae.

Krystal, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, my love for makeup began at the age of 12. I remember trying different things in the mirror as I got ready for school. I’d play with glitter and put it in my inner eye and put different color lip gloss (they all came out clear) on my lips thinking I was doing something big. I always was creative. I pushed the limits within my age range and based on what my mother would allow. At 18, I was a free bird.

I always practiced with different products and thus grew my knowledge and artistry skills. I shopped for the latest products and makeup brushes for my personal use. I tried different techniques to achieve the look I wanted and began to set trends. I evolved into a self-taught artist.

With the help of mentors, I perfected my craft and officially began my career as a freelance makeup artist in 2014. I successfully worked at Dilliard’s and Macys as a Counter Manager and have had the opportunity to work with amazing artists. When I’m not doing makeup, I am busy being a wife to my best friend Naeem and mother to five beautiful children: Kaleb, Kayla, Kaylee, Kaylin and Kali.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been too rough, honestly. Best advice I can give is to pace yourself. I’ve always had a bad habit of moving too quickly and being ready for the next level. Pace yourself in your artistry by mastering your personal style, your desired industry (bridal, TV, models) and building your clientele in that industry. Everything will fall into place once those things are done.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I’m a professional makeup artist and bridal expert. I specialize in providing a luxurious experience and look while maintaining my client’s natural beauty. I’m most proud of my client’s understanding of my aesthetic in terms of what I offer coinciding with their exact desires.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I feel the only barriers are the ones we create by not uniting and having a genuine desire for everyone to win. Having a clear understanding that what is for you is truly for you and you reap what you sew.
