Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Phiri.
Margaret, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I discovered early on in my life that I do not like math. So it made zero sense for me to work as a financial specialist. Experiencing migraines first thing in the morning after pulling into your workplace parking lot was the confirmation I needed that this was not going to be my life.
Being creative is what I thrived on. Arts, designing and communication were my passion. Once life started pushing me into those roles, I started expanding my skill set and getting more and more confident doing things that I enjoyed.
In 2008, and I was learning new design skills through courses, that’s when I learned the power of mentorship. Having partnered with someone who already knew what direction I wanted to go in, it was an easy roadmap for me to follow and carve my own niche.
Before I knew it, one referral lead to the next and so on. Eleven years later, I am still doing what I love.
I used to think working a 9 to 5 job would kill my creative spirit!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road for me. I have faced many challenges along the way. Life can get complicated. There are obstacles that you will face on a daily basis. The key is to keep moving forward. Step back and create a plan of action then execute it. If you fail that just means try something else. Failure is one thing that I had to learn is not a bad thing. You learn from those experiences and do better the next time around.
One of my biggest struggles was asking for help. Being an island is not healthy. Ask for help before you need it. Working with a mentor is a huge asset. If you find something, that is where you want to be in life. Learn from them. Ask them a lot of questions. They have been where you are trying to get. So open up and create relationships. That is a lesson I wished I had learned early on in my life. You can save yourself a lot of time and money by having a great mentor who invests the time with you. Mentorship is my biggest advice to any woman who wants to branch out on her own.
Time management is key! Decide if you will have want $10.00 an hour or $1,000.00 an hour task. Do the things that bring in real revenue. Pursue the things that bring real profit. There are only 24 hours in one day. Use them wisely.
There are organizations that build around helping women succeed in business. Get connected and plug into the ones that speak your language. Atlanta has a lot of wonderful organizations built around empowering women in all aspects. Use your resources and plugin. Do not be an island.
Another important tip I would like to pass along is saving your money. Pay yourself first. Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowiczirst is worth the investment. Also, it is available on Amazon. Read it. Lastly, never stop learning. Ask questions, take courses, and remain childlike and curious about everything! Read or listen to audiobooks. Investing in you is always a worthwhile investment.
