Meet Trailblazer Shaniece Harvey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaniece Harvey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Raised in the small town of New Bern, North Carolina, I grew to understand the importance of family and close relationships while being taught to dream big. The many obstacles of finances and addictions I witnessed in my family, taught me to take the good and bad in my environment and use it as momentum to become my best self. While in college, I stumbled upon the Media Studies major at UNCG and during a News Anchor Class, I discovered my love of speaking to audiences. I realized that my purpose was to use that platform to encourage people around the world to become their best selves. Although I had identified my purpose, there was no straight path to pursue it. I worked my first gig as a movie Production Assistant in the snow, for free! It was a true example of what my journey to becoming a TV host would look like. I quickly learned that being uncomfortable, sacrifice and commitment were necessary for me to reach my dreams. After a God-given vision of someone I would work for in Atlanta, I made an uncomfortable sacrifice. With only $400 in my account, I moved to Atlanta by faith. Six years later, not only have I worked for that person (Tyler Perry), I have worked for many other great productions and networks.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This life journey has been everything but smooth. I have struggled with burdens of financial lack, depression, and loneliness. I came into the entertainment industry knowing that it would be tough but that did not eliminate the frustration of repeatedly being denied. Despite how hard you work; it can take years before you see a glimpse of your dreams manifesting. For this reason, it’s important to focus on perfecting your craft instead of the time frame it takes to get a “yes”. For any young woman starting their journey, I’ve learned that although hard work is required, don’t consume yourself with work at the expense of your faith, physical or mental health, find balance and don’t lose sight of your calling. Also, create your own content; when people won’t give you opportunities, you can create your own. Lastly, never give up… PERIOD.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’ve worked numerous jobs in the entertainment industry such as Stand-in, Table Reader, Audience Coordinator, but most people know me from my work as a Set Production Assistant. As a Production Assistant, I am often praised for how well I work with people and my ability to get things done efficiently. Another skill I have picked up over the last five years is headshot editing. I’ve continued to build on these skills to develop my personal brand which includes my YouTube series titled “Be a Better You” which I am most proud of. Through this platform, I help others reach their full potential through a quick, informative and engaging presentation of life’s tips and tricks. In addition to “Be a Better You”, I’ve most recently ventured out and launched a statement line of clothing that proposes commitments to life changes called UNcapped Living! My faith in God has led me to create opportunities when they aren’t given, and I’ve been set apart since the very beginning. -Jeremiah 1:5

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I believe one of the biggest barriers today to female leadership in the entertainment industry is male chauvinism. From pay gaps to sexual intimidation, it’s evident that women are not considered as equals. It’s difficult for a woman to showcase her strengths in this industry without being looked at as just a “beauty pawn.” Despite how talented and skilled many women are they are still considered less valuable. There have been strides to address and change this issue, but there is still much work to be done.
