Meet Trailblazer Shayla Hairston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla Hairston.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Design has always come naturally to me. As a teen, I constantly rearranged the future, suggested new color palettes, and picked out flattering accessories for my parent’s home. I genuinely loved homes and creating exciting new living spaces. My aptitude for design paid off when I won the youth Dream Home Competition in my hometown of Pensacola, Florida. From that point on, I knew my career direction and set my heart on using my creative talents to become an Architect.

Designing dreams became my passion. I started working with a firm that placed me in a dual role in interior design and architecture. I had the best of both worlds, form, and fashion. I was able to draw plans and interpret the aesthetics of the spaces I had created. After staging and selling my own homes, I discovered my passion for home staging. That is when I decided to start my own business, Harston Home Design, a home staging, and interior redesign firm.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey has been valuable because of the lessons I learned along the way. My obstacle was self-imposed; it was the fear of the unknown. I believed that everything needed to be perfect before I could share the progress I had already made. So, I asked myself these questions: “Do you want to grow?” “Do you want to do something you really enjoy?” “Do you want to live up to your potential?” “Do you want to stay stagnant, where you are and not fulfill your dreams?” My answer was, “I choose growth and success.”

My advice to young women is to trust your heart and to run toward your dreams. Your dreams are your compass for growth and success. We all have our own unique talents and they are always bigger than our fears. When we use our talents, we collectively make the world a better place.

We’d love to hear more about Harston Home Design.
Harston Home is a home staging and interior redesign firm serving clients in the Atlanta metro area. Harston Home was born because I have always enjoyed the special feeling I get when entering a beautifully decorated home. Our goal is to share that feeling with our clients and potential home buyers. I specialize in occupied home staging and e-design, which allows us to use technology to redecorate spaces to the satisfaction of our homeowners. I am most proud when a client or buyer gives a testimonial confirming their appreciation of a job well done.

Our firm provides an array of unique design options, such as our relocation space planning service. This service dramatically reduces the time spent moving into a new home. We use a computer-based space planning program to which allows us to design the layout of the furniture, accessories, and artwork prior to the actual move.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
The design industry is female friendly and has a myriad of opportunities. The sky is the limit as to where women can go as demonstrated by the success of female designers featured in lifestyle magazines and television shows. Doors are being opened in the TV world, blogs, and YouTube channels. Women can create a presence for themselves through many forms of media.
