Meet Trailblazer Shir Kaufman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shir Kaufman.

Shir, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I discovered my passion for the performing arts. Since then, I’ve worked as a professional actress in Israel with the hopes of fulfilling my dream of performing as the first Israeli in the role of Elphaba (“Wicked”) on Broadway.

In 2017, I enrolled in The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) and graduated its conservatory two years Musical Theater program. It was a fantastic experience, and I sharpened my dance, singing, and acting skills. I will keep working hard to fulfill all my dreams.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As an international artist, it was not easy to move to another country and deal with language and cultural barriers, even after more than 2.5 years in the USA. However, I know that this is necessary if I am to achieve my goals and dreams. To other young women, I would say that even if the journey is hard, don’t give up on your dreams! You could do incredible things if you set your mind to it. Life is unpredictable, and you could grow from any crisis. If you have a dream, go for it and enjoy the road. Be bold and persistent.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
After graduating, I started looking for work in the field of musical theater. I found an amazing organization called “The Israeli Artists Project” (IAP) that connects Israeli artists with an American audience. Immediately, I became one of the team and was the lead producer and lead actress in a cabaret show that was adapted from texts of one of the most renowned playwrights in Israel, Hanoch Levin. Since last year I’ve been involved in the myriad of different projects of IAP. I was a lead singer at its music shows, produced events, led marketing campaigns, and cast for its shows. It was eye-opening to experience unique aspects of show business and has helped me to become a better performer, as well.

Aside from my work at IAP, I’m also participating in a show called “A therapy session with myself” by Anthony J. Piccione at “Kraine” theater, an Off-Broadway venue. The show is about the tribulations and triumphs of a college student who is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, social anxiety and depression as he aspires to become a writer. I’m excited to be part of the production and want to promote a message to the audience that everyone should be treated equally and should get the same rights. I enjoy acting in roles that differ in language, culture, interpersonal relationships from my own experience. However, I can still identify with the characters and story. As an international artist, I believe art should transcend borders, cultures, and languages.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Try to think what makes you special and unique; each one of us has a different skill set. Think of what you can contribute to others and to the world. Only good things can come from following your passion. I truly believe that if you want to send it to the world, you’ll get it back.
